Tire(s) replacement
How sensitive are these cars to tread depth differential on the same axel? I ask because I may need to replace one (or both?) rear tires due to a patch that I think is leaking. The tires have about 18k miles. Michelin A/S 3+.

I'm speaking purely for myself and my experience. I live in the Minneapolis area where snow, ice and massive potholes rule the day, I've had my f06 xDrive for 2.5 years and I drive it year round 30K a year. I have replaced 7 tires all randomly from various punctures and blowouts (one just this past week) I have seen no negative issues.

I tried to research this in a fair amount of depth once, although not necessarily for this car. It's rather confusing and seems to be largely theoretical. What you won't find is examples of people saying "my car suffered a major failure and I was told it was because my tires sizes were too far off." Nonetheless, the drivetrain is supposedly unduly strained because the different diameter tires tires rotate a different number of times per mile. Car makers have different recommendations, with 2/32" difference on the low side and 4/32" on the high side. A new tire is about 11/32" tread depth and a worn out tire is about 3/32" in depth. So if you are at 5/32" on one side, a new tire is probably too much on the other side.

Love the quote! It looks like you're in the LA area, I actually came out to the Twin Cities from Huntington Beach.... My wife often reminds me that it may be time to move back home.

I left MN at 18. I couldn’t take the winters. Lol! I lived in Newport Beach for 8 years, then moved to LA because of work. The commute was vicious! Your wife may have a point! Have a great weekend!

It's good practice to replace them in pairs.
I have always done this myself. I would replace the pair if they've done 18k miles, because otherwise you'll be permanently out of sync on the wear and replacement cycle, and one will be wearing out more than the other. |

Tire Shortage
I tried to replace both rears with new Michelin A/S 3+ And found out that due to the Pandemic, they are not available and probably won’t be for 8-10 weeks. I can get the fronts, but not the rears. 275 30 20. I was surprised at first, but then realized that it makes sense. Sigh.
