For my M6, the number was 1200 miles. All of that took place in Germany on European Delivery program. They told me not over 5,500 on the tach and not over 100 mph, no wide-open throttle. Also to vary the tach and speed a lot (so no cruise control), in the first few hundred miles especially. I had a nice first day burbling around the Bavarian countryside the first driving day, so that was OK. I'm not sure I violated the 5,500 rpm rule or the WOT rule; I know I broke the 100-mph rule.

I've seen and heard a number of opinions/rules on this, but I was advised the same course as tab verbatim (5500 RPM/<100MPH/vary RPM/no open throttle) and followed it religiously with great results. Engine seems to get stronger and have had to add only 1 quart of oil in 2 years.

It's officially 1200 miles and your iDrive will pop up a message (in vehicle service section) for you to remind you it's time for break-in service.
break-in service is basically Engine and Differential oil change and a quick software setting to unlock the Launch Control. You have to have them performed this service otherwise BMW might void the warranty.

Only when you are on the AMG driver tour, BMW M series or Porsche turbo tack days (DRIVING THEIR CARS AND NOT YOURS) ... Or else you own the resultant problem till you trade up

I'd follow the recommendation of your dealer's Service Department as they will have to deal with the break in servicing and after care!

Driving like a gentleman for the first 1200 miles and a little aggressive (if you would like) for the following 1000 mile. After that you can drive your car the way it's meant to be driven... but I know many people disagree and believe in driving the car like it's stolen from the first day. There are lots of threads all over the places including bimmerpost and people claim if during the first 100 miles you live next to redline, driving at lower gears (1,2) and using engine braking, the oil consumption issue will not happen. General speaking this engine is oil thirsty and for the first 10,000 mile you need to add 1 liter oil every 1500-2000 miles...

Ok... I think I now know the pain of driving under 4k. Picked up car today with six miles on it and drove under 4k... pain is the key word. At least I was able to lessen the pain by trying to figure out how to sync my phone, setup the audio settings, adjust the ride etc... Probably not the best thing to do while on the freeway now that I think back.

The most important period is for the first 100 miles or so. This is what I did after doing quite a bit of research which verified what I was going to do anyway!
- Get the car up to temperature as quickly as possible, and do a few (or one) long trips. - Regularly use the maximum allowed revs (5,500) but not under heavy load and only when the oil is fully warmed up. - Vary the engine speed and selected gear. - Use as much engine braking as possible. The key is to seat the piston rings before the cylinder walls glaze, this is necessary for maximum power and minimum oil consumption. If you don't achieve this then the car will consume oil for the rest of its life. After the first 100 miles or so, drive the car with fewer revs but still vary them. After the 1,200 mile oil change, gradually increase load and revs. My car uses no oil at all and feels plenty powerful enough, although I've not had it on a dyno. |

34 miles in... When I picked up the car on Saturday they said to keep under 4k... so have been trying to follow that to date. Engine braking - lots of that so far. I'm looking forward to break-in being something in the past...
