M Drivers Pack Retrofit on UK M6

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
My other half fancied a trip to Berlin so I saw a good opportunity to drive there and stretch my M6's legs - you know, using it for it's intended purpose which is to cross a continent, preferably flat out on the autobahn Not sure she's quite so enthusiastic but she's being tolerant nonetheless.

On the way, I'm also stopping off at the BMW dealer in Aachen to have the M Drivers Pack retrofitted (190mph limiter, not available in the UK) - hopefully it'll work on my UK-spec car meaning I can swerve the frustration of the (frankly ridiculous) 155 limiter, which the car can hit in literally seconds.

Hats off the AC Schnitzer here - I contacted them to buy their speed limit removal product as they're one of the few in Europe who have managed to break the code for the speed limiter, backed up by a proper warranty too. However, they couldn't do it on my car (it needs the M Drivers Pack in the first instance apparently) but they did help me liaise with the BMW dealer (where their HQ is based) to get BMW's official product

Anyway, a few gratuitous pictures as of my nicely waxed M6 just before we leave.

A clean car is a faster car, right? San Marino blue looks incredible in the sunlight but I'm sure it won't look like this in a few days......

Richard, you're a funny guy...no I'm not get it delimited twice!

It's crazy enough paying for a 190mph top speed, which I'll use probably no more than 4-5 times a year! Definitely don't need it to go any faster than that!

In any case, I think all aftermarket de-limiters, inc. AC Schnitzer 'only' (lol!) allow it to go to about 202mph as they don't overcome the secondary limit in the transmission. I could be wrong though.

I believe the M school driving is included with this package so you will have fun over there. I wish we had this option in US but we do not. here in US just the cost of 2 days M school is about $3500 + the cost of air ticket to colorado with no speed limiter removed

Yes it is included, which is one of the reasons I've gone down this route. Honestly, it's not worth the cost for just for the speed limit removal alone, but, when I was already going to spend 50%+ of the cost on a trackday to the Nurburging (in my own car and all the negatives that involves), it made sense to do this. Even better, with the M trackday, I get to do it in someone else's car and get a bit of tuition too

And....I keep my warranty.

Speed limiter successfully removed . Well, sort of....it kicks in again at an indicated 195mph.

The car is outrageous; I've said it before, I'll say it again - there's little this side of a hypercar that's as quick above 120mph. Not my 911 turbo, not my SLS - this M6 pulls strong right through the 180's, with the digital speedo still gaining speed in 2-3mph increments. Only above 190 does the gain slow to single increments.

It's so quick that, in a 400 mile journey across Germany this afternoon, it was easy to see the other side of 190 on numerous occasions - I only dare attempt it when traffic is very light or non existent so that tells you how relatively little road you need to see those big speeds. After the constraints of driving it in the UK, it feels fantastic to repeatedly be able to rev it out in 3rd, 4th and then (in the high 180's) 5th, using the shift lights in the HUD to help you get the most out of it without taking your eye off the road.

The other stand out highlights are how composed it is at those speeds and the brakes. Sometimes I'll criticise the M6's less than smooth body control on a typically bumpy twisty road that you find in the UK, but today highlights how it's clearly been engineered for something else. The level of control and surefootedness it has at speed is phenomenal...where some of my previous cars have felt less than planted at really high speed, the M6 was pinned to the road even when you hit a bump, mid-bend, at 188mph! And those ceramic brakes just got better and better with use - repeated high speed braking in a heavy car with steel brakes usually ends in a degree if fade, followed by judder and noise. These ceramics just lapped it up time after time and felt superb.

All in all, it's great to experience and appreciate the car for what it's clearly been designed to do. Thoroughly recommended!

Sounds epic! When do you get to do the track day course?

Now that you have the 190mph limiter and have experienced the acceleration to get to it, just as a matter of interest, what do you think the car would do if completely delimited? The E60 M5 was supposed to do about 205mph if delimited, I'd assume that the F12/13/06 family would exceed that, but by how much?

What a joy... sure would be good to get it on an airstrip or track to really test it out. 155 just feels so pedestrian.. hard to believe, but you guys (and girls if any) understand.

Thanks guys

Had a really good run yesterday doing Berlin to Hook of Holland in 5 hours (almost the width if Western Europe!), with two fuel stops and a best of 196mph. Liberating!

Trackday is open ended so will probably do in the summer.

The car was accelerating at approx 1-2mph every second at 190 in 6th. It still accelerated in 7th, despite that gear being potentially good for 250mph. I reckon the way it felt in the 190's, it would achieve 210mph+, but I doubt that'll ever happen until someone finds a way to overcome the 202mph limiter in the transmission.
