So there was a post a while back of upgrading the the orange lights to a different color via an app or light controller

Well now it can be done via idrive

https://www.facebook.com/groups/8383...n=mo&ref=share

The op said it was done via a shop in New Jersey. Any one have any leads on how it could be retrofitted as a diy?

Nah man. They replaced the lights also for sure. See the dash, it has more lights installed.
I think what they did, is they installed an OEM f10 or G series lighting + module and then they coded out in iDrive.
I hope we can get some more info from that Jersey shop.

When I had my 2016 535i f10 I was going to do this retrofit. Looking at that video, looks like it can be done on the pre LCI versions or those with id4.
I have yet to see this retrofit done on cars with id5 and better. Would love to see this for the LCI 6ers.

Some Lci 6ers have id4 like mine.

Mine is a 2016 with a production date of 12/2015. But if it's only in id4 I guess I'm lucky but I do want to one day get id5/6.

But my android auto unit has put that item on the back burner. Maybe the info will be leaked one day.

Cause I would like to do this

Agreed. The 3 reasons why I was about to get a G30 540 was because of

Id6
Interior lighting
B58

Id6 can be retrofitted and I have no issues with the N55. The interior lighting will make the car as up-to-date as it needs to be

The multi-color optioned ambient lighting in the newer BMWs doesn't have anything to do with the iDrive version...it is the LED lights themselves. The f06/f12/f13 models have single colored LEDs. The BMWs that have multi-color ambient light options have LEDs that are designed for multiple colors.

That's why some of the BMW models that have the multi color LEDs that originally were offered a selection of ORANGE, BLUE, and/or WHITE in iDrive...can be coded for more colors.

To get multiple colors in the F body 6 series requires new lights (#3/#4/#5/#6 in the diagram) and/or LED modules (#1 & #2 in the diagram):

I call bullshit on that video. I know the electronics setup of the Fix 6-er like the back of my hand since I did a full NBT retrofit using OEM hardware without any decoders. The control modules and wiring required for RGB ambient lighting simply do not exist in the Fxx 6-er. Also, in that video they keep panning left and right with the colours changing, but never once do they show the colours changing due to a direct input on the iDrive interface.

Here's the technical explanation for those who are interested:

On the wiring side the ambient lighting in the Fxx 6-er uses two wires, while cars with RGB lighting uses 3 or more wires. It's not as simple as simply swapping out the modules.

The ambient lighting LEDs in the Fxx 6-er are connected with two wires (load and ground) to the FRM (footwell module) for control but limited/no diagnostics. By comparison, a G30 5-series has its RGB LED modules connected by 4 wires (load, earth, LIN-in and LIN-out) to the BDC (Body Domain Controller). So while the 6-er does have LIN-bus present it does not have a BDC and as such, no way to address the LED modules.

My guess is that the guys in the video may have developed an interface box that co-opts the signal from the idrive controller on the K-CAN2/4 bus to change the ambient light colours on their aftermarket LED modules.

Well I understand your explanation. But every day products are being developed for our cars... such as now there is a Digital dash available for the 640 and 650 models that's plug and play that utilizes The new G style dash figures. Like a 2020 850i. Retains all factory functions (M6 not confirmed, the company needs a M car for testing to see if m logo is retained)

With that being said. It's simply a product you can buy. It's about 280 dollars and it indeed work with NBT only. Cars with CIC will have to use radio buttons to change brightness and colors. 5,6,7,8. On nbt you can doi it via radio buttons, idrive menu or idrive controller.

I did some research and boom there it is

Can you send us a link to where we can find all the required parts for this retrofit?I feel like as beautiful as the 6’s interior is, it is a dark interior at night (especially with my black headliner/and brown leather combination.

This would definitely brighten things up.

Ah and therein lies the subtle distinction. It’s an aftermarket kit and has nothing to do with BMW hardware, G-series etc. And it supports exactly what I said about an interface that co-opts signals from the car to change colours on aftermarket modules.

And yes, I know about the cluster replacement you may be talking about too as I’ve been following development of similar clusters for years. They are linux or android based units the this one: https://www.machineryoffers.com/offe...ux-System.html

Yea I know it prolly wasn't going to be an oem retrofit.
But I. Just glad some one took the time to do it. And it would be way cheaper then trying to find oem modules and trying to make it work
