Most expensive repairs?
Hello,
I am looking to purchase a 2015 m6 GC, the car has the existing factory warranty, and I am trying to decide if it's worth getting the extended warranty plan. I wanted to know what major repairs you have encountered with the m6 and cost associated with it. Whether it was covered under warranty or not. |

also interested as well as I'm also looking to buy a '14 M6 out of warranty.
I would imagine any major issues with powertrain would be endemic across with the X5M and M5s...maybe better luck reaching out to those forums?

I had them replaced the Rear Differential under warranty. Regular cost: over 5k I had them replaced the DCT clutch under warranty. Regular cost: over 5k I had them replaced the Bank 1 injector of my 650i under warranty. Regular cost: over 5k And keep in mind. You are driving one of the most expensive BMW over entire lineup! It costs A LOT for repair...

Route 66 is popular with BMW owners.

Wasn't the rear diff issue an actual recall? (and if not recall, got the extended 10 year parts warranty?) Why are we talking 650i powertrain issues here? Apples and oranges, might as well talk about M3 rod bearing issues, or N54 fuel pump or N63 issues if we're talking general BMW issues here. DCT repairs are really rare.

The diff was ultimately recalled: http://f10.m5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1298195 Traditionally, from my extensive ownership experience of the M3 and X5, endemic issues found later on generally also got a 10 year extended parts warranty, IF not recalled. Saying that the N63 injector issues is related to S63 is absurd. The N63 is a basketcase. It has extensive history of issues related to the powertrain and specifically the injectors. Aside from engine management and turbo plumbing, the S63 also has different valves than the N63. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_N63#N63B44O0 My point is, you're mixing issues across multiple platforms. I don't disagree M cars are expensive when they break, but point I'm trying to make is, M cars don't break, and the parts that do are either recalled or have extended warranties or in some cases get goodwill fixes. I for one will not buy any extended warranty, and as such, I would have taken my chance on this car that missed it's 1200 service by 1000 miles.

After about 6 years (since September 2011) ownership of different high end BMW, if my cars did not have warranty (obviously they had because they all were brand new), I would pay over 30k out of packet because of issues they had and I had dealer fixed under warranty; so I will never get ANY USED BMW without warranty but to each his own

Now I understand we are not talking about an M car here (M cars will have a higher repair bill, hence why I agree with you about having a warranty for peace fo mind). Luckily I have connections to a mechanics shop and knew I would not have to pay for labor if anything happened to my car. From 50,000-120,000 miles I only spent around $3000 on parts. It was a good idea to skip out on the warranty for me. The main thing I want to get out of this thread is what major repairs people have done so I can get a good idea if I should skip out on the warranty or cough up the extra $5000+. |

Do you have enough cash laying around to fork out 20K for a new motor? How about 10K for a new transmission? If not, buy a warranty.

I too would not own an M w/o a warranty. The simple answer is that, on average, the typical repair costs will not exceed the warranty cost, otherwise warranty companies would go bankrupt. However, the cost of a catastrophic failure or several minor failures will exceed the warranty cost. My car had leaking turbo lines, fixed under warranty, saved 2k. These are complicated cars.
However, the other issue is the quality of the warranty company itself. I has a carmax warranty on an Audi, it paid out over 12k in 1.5 years, no questions asked. However, I was denied coverage on my wife's Cayenne by Mercury for a thermostat that was stuck ($2,200 at the Porsche dealer) as a pre-existing condition (I knew that I would be most likely denied as the codes for the issue were recent, but was disappointed it took 4 days to get an answer. What surprised me was that I had an oil weep that they also denied, so I was afraid that all claims in the future would be a fight, so I cancelled the coverage). That said, if you go BMW, shop around, I found a dealer in Maryland that offered a $250 discount over my Florida dealer, plus no sales tax in Md, so I saved over $500.

I had good experiences with Assurant, they underwrote Carmax warranty, had bad dealings with Mercury, so I cancelled. I am currently on a 24/70k extended from BMW, I have 22k miles and 15 months left.

I will also go on record to say Route 66 paid every claim in my N54 335i with no issues. I paid $2,400 for the warranty and when ai sold the car they had already paid over $5k in repairs.
