I've done just fine for years and a RWD 650 in the snow in Chicago. In fact, I previously had a RWD 650 that was my winter beater! I've had around a dozen rear wheel drive winter cars in Chicago in the snow and the cold. They all had dedicated winter tires and I have more traction than most of the people who had all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive. It's all about the tires and the driver.
