Losing a wheel altogether would have ruined your day! Glad you caught it early enough. Checking the lug contact surfaces is important, but also check the mating surfaces on the backside of the wheels as well as where they meet the rotors.

I was just chatting with a guy who owned one when they were just used cars. His rusted away, as so many did. It's great to see a survivor.
