I am originally from London, moved to west coast of Ireland in 2006, car taxes here are give and take double of UK, so when buying a new car you get hit by VAT 21% and you get a second tax called VRT going at 25% on average linked to emissions, so after my e39 last car I owned in the UK, had to switch to 4 pot engines diesel and still paid over what you folks in the UK will end paying for straight 6, this means petrol straight 6 engines are literally as rare as a Ferrari 280 GTO in Ireland, we lately upgraded our family car from X5 40e to new X5 45e, so our first new straight six petrol engine thanks to the hybrid, the car still cost us some 20k more than UK prices.
If I am to import a 640i from UK, with Brexit I am having to pay VAT 21%, import tax 10% and VRT based on emission another 25%, so looking at north of 55k for 2016 car, hence the only option is to stay with the local market now consisting of only diesels, and mind you still paying a fortune! For 2017 640d in UK you looking at around £22k (€25k), In Ireland you looking at around €40k for a 2016, maybe cheaper outside main dealer network.
I also live in the country side, so good mileage, and for that Diesel make sense, as for my petrolhead side, I use my 911 4s when kids not around.

Sorry I'm just curious. I personally really dislike them. Maybe it's a misconception. But what puts you off the 640i petrol?
