That does appear to be permanent damage. That material is what BMW calls leather, but it's really a manufactured leather that contains some percentage of real leather. Just the part (the whole dash panel) from an online discount dealer is almost $3,500, plus a large amount to have it installed. So unless you want to pay at least $5,000 to make it like new, having it sprayed is your only option. The person you talked to is correct, it will only be less noticeable, it will not be perfect. The grain has been smoothed out, and it has a ridge around it where the surface was "melted" but not removed. I predict it will still be fairly noticeable, especially since you knew it was there.
