I'm not sure what sort of performance advantage people notice with carbon fiber mirror caps or front splitter. But here we are...

contact patch area is an X(Y) problem, a few mm of width does actually make a difference. You can put +10 tires on factory rims, no spacers, no rubbing, no changing suspension geometries. I would bet that there is a larger difference in the gain from tire width than the loss from tire weight.

Also, wider section width gives you more rubber overhang and less likely to curb rash the rim, assuming you are into that kind of thing too.
