I appreciate your concern, and this is why being a responsible gun owner is not to be taken lightly. I wish my wife would let me take her to the range, but she has no interest.

7 years old is definitely old enough to start shooting a nice .22. Even an AR in .223 would be doable for some 7 year olds.
