I think it is somewhat inherent to the M6 brakes, as the other BMW models I've owned have all had quiet brakes until they've needed replacement. Seems like the higher the fade resistance, the more heat needed to get them to operate quietly. Carbons are on the extreme end, with the standard M brakes being somewhere between carbon ceramics and non-M brakes. The noise can definitely get annoying sometimes but I don't let it become anything embarrassing - it just lets everyone else at the intersection know we have arrived
