The V1 is generally considered to be an excellent radar detector. I believe the
best radar detector that money can buy is probably something like a Beltronics Sti-R Plus.
One of the better known radar detector reviewers is a person named 'veilguy.' I highly suggest you check out his blog here:

He also makes videos for youtube where he'll routinely (and simultaneously) test competing radar detectors on the market. I know he has a video floating around showing a Beltronics STI-R outperforming a V1 by a second or so. It's certainly not a scientifically rigorous test, but it's the best we've got.
