There really isn't a rule of thumb on how often to change brake pads. And comfort mode doesn't really make any difference. It all depends on how many times you brake and how hard you brake each time. You and another owner may each put 8,000 miles on your cars in a year, but he only brakes 20,000 times in that distance and you brake 40,000 times and twice as hard. You should not rely on the warning light at all. Just rely on a visual inspection. The pads are not hard to see. Do it yourself or have someone do it for you. When they are about 3mm thick, replace them and the rotors.
