Brake pad replacement

The car is telling me it is time for a rear brake pad replacement, so do I replace just the pads or do I have to replace the discs as well (when I was in the garage about 2 months ago, they also told me I had a few months left on my pads but said my discs were good; I have 51,000 miles on the car).

The reason I am asking this question is that a few years back, I replaced just the pads on my 4 series GC and the brakes squealed from that point forward, and I was told by the garage that changed them that you must change the discs as well when replacing pads as squealing will most likely happen if you do not change them both at the same time.

Is that correct or was the garage trying to do unnecessary work?

Thanks
