I would probably sell it as well... what a pita, so sending some sympathy your way as you got the short straw. glad to report that I'm coming up on 5k miles since I bought mine and haven't had to add any oil. Will do an oil change soon which will hopefully confirm that it's not burning anything.
I really have trouble understanding how BMW can stick to their position that this much oil usage is within the "normal" range for this engine, when presumably so many other M cars with this engine aren't burning much if any oil. I would be very frustrated, but that's the approach of most major car manufacturers when faced with a very costly decision to issue a TSB, customer "campaign" or even a recall. The $$ frequently outweigh the customer concerns and car longevity. Well, my rant on your behalf is done
