Too bad that the little plastic/rubbery tether can't be purchased separately. I guess just another way for BMW to keep pinching dollar bills out of our pockets. The fuel filler cap itself probably would last the lifetime of the car...so let's make a permanent attachment on the fuel cap side so when the tether wears out...they'll have to buy a completely new fuel filler cap instead of a cheap tether only.

I didn't pinch it. It just wore out. I suspect it indeed was the cheapest "rubber" and plastic part they can design to minimize material cost.
When I take my cap off, I never let it hang, or tug on it, or twist it. I simply place it the holder and yet it still broke.
