I've confirmed with my service advisor that 'lifetime' does refer to 100k miles, engine coolant also falls into this category as well.
I agree with your philosophy though, I change all fluids at about a 2:1 ratio to BMW's recommendations as I believe it is a relatively inexpensive way to prevent expensive issues long term
