My understanding is that the standard hood (or bonnet as we call it in the UK!) is made of an aluminium alloy. So it won't rust, but if the surface is broken then aluminium corrosion could ultimately occur if it is left untreated. If it doesn't warrant a respray, then I suggest getting the relevant touchup paint kit from BMW.
