I have found it very difficult to get rid of crab grass without damaging the rest of the lawn. There are some products that slow its growth but I have found killing it with weed killer and re-sodding is the only way to really get rid of it, at least with St. Augustine which is almost crab grass itself. Once eliminated, the best defense is a healthy lawn to crowd out weeds. Easier said than done, of course.
