Could it be that the part in question (thus the car) was often exposed either to extreme heat or extreme cold - both conditions which could cause it to detiororate more quickly and over a shorter period of time despite the lid over it? I have had the my 650iX for less than year but my F32 for almost 5 years (and an E92 before that) and never had issues or observed any anomalies even as cheap as the parts may be. Just my experience.
