Ferrari: greater efficiency for the release of the 066/15 power unit
— Ferrari has completed the first ignition of its 066/15 power unit, marking a key milestone ahead of the 2025 season. This ritual, known as “fire up,” confirms the completion of the engine’s design phase and ensures all components are functioning properly before the car hits the track.
— The process involves extensive preparation, including testing all parameters related to the power unit and ensuring the battery pack is fully charged. Engineers connect their computers to the engine control unit (ECU) to monitor critical data, while an external pump circulates heated coolant to prevent component abrasion.
— Once the engine reaches optimal operating temperatures, an electric start system circulates lubricant through the internal components before ignition. Under the supervision of Ferrari power unit chief Enrico Gualtieri, the V6 engine was successfully fired up, running at idle speeds of 3,000-4,000 rpm while maintaining stable temperatures.
— Despite the development freeze imposed since 2022, Ferrari has made improvements to enhance the efficiency and reliability of the 066/15 unit. Adjustments to external components in the temperature management system are expected to improve performance, aligning with the aerodynamic advancements of the SF-25.
— These refinements aim to maximize power output in qualifying while optimizing fuel consumption over race distances, reinforcing Ferrari’s push for competitiveness in the final season before F1’s 2026 engine regulation overhaul.
