There are gears in an automatic transmission. Also in both manual and automatic transmissions gear teeth have an involute shape and thus experience a rolling motion against a mating tooth.
As an aside I don't know how common it is but some manual transmissions can be designed to use (require) ATF and not the more viscous manual transmission lube.
My 1996 Mustang GT and its 5-speed manual was one such transmission.
