I've always been told that during the break-in period, don't baby the car. If the limit is say 5,500 rpm, by all means take it up to 5,500 but don't keep it there. Let loose to the limit, then take your foot off of the pedal, vary the rpm's constantly within the limit.
I drove a 550 as a DD prior, did the same, averaged about 1 quart every 9-12K miles, with most of the time not having to top off because of oil changes.
