Confirmed: M6 / M5 AWD Being Considered For Next Generation
BIMMERPOST NEWS BMW M CEO: Next Gen BMW M5 / M6 May Feature Optional AWD BMW M always claims that it subscribes to no dogmas while considering all possibilities as it develops new models. That now includes the possibility of all-wheel-drive M5 and M6 models. In a recent interview with Motoring, BMW M CEO Dr. Friedrich Nitschke acknowledges that "I've looked at the numbers and 70 to 80 percent of E63 AMGs are all-wheel drive in the US now." To this he confirms that: "On our cars we are thinking of all-wheel drive, but it won’t come before we get the successor of the M5 and M6." "That’s the timing and it's not practical to react in the current life cycles." Which M models will potentially see an AWD option? "The M5 and M6, maybe in the next generation they could get AWD, but not with the M3 or M4. Never," says Nitschke. If you're a RWD fan, fret not, as the BMW CEO confirms that any AWD system would be optional as he understands that most M buyers prefer rear-wheel drive. There's not much to complain about with this news as it potentially gives owners in wintery climates a AWD option, as well as satisfying owners desiring more traction in dealing with the M5/M6's monstrous 560hp and 500 lb-ft torque. Yet, there would still be a RWD model for the more traditional lot of us. The earliest we could see a AWD M model will be 2017-2018, when the next generation M5 and M6 arrive. |

For sure, definitely at least as an option when ordering an M5/M6. It was inevitable.

Especially given the direction AMG has taken with the E63 starting with the 2014 model, and given that Audi has always been AWD. Hopefully, it remains an option, and not standard like the E63 AMG or Audi RS. |

I'm a TOTAL rear wheel drive guy, but when you're talking 600+ HP int he next M5/M6, you need the AWD to put the power down. I'm pretty sure BMW will have a rear bias to the AWD.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."
