The BMW Performance Center and Crowne Plaza Hotels & Resorts today announced that the 560 horsepower 2013 BMW M6 Coupe will participate in the grueling One Lap of America event starting May 4, 2013. Instructors from the BMW Performance Center, located in Spartanburg, South Carolina, will drive the 3,400 mile tour that originates in South Bend, Indiana and incorporates autocross, skid pad, drag strip, and closed course racing.

During the eight day event drivers; Mike Renner and Steve Maguire, along with more than 80 other competitors will visit Talladega Grand Prix Raceway, NOLA Motorsports Park, Daytona International Speedway, Carolina Motorsports Park, Virginia International Raceway, Pittsburg International Raceway, and the BMW Performance Center.

“The third generation M6 will compete for the ‘Showroom Stock’ recognition within the Luxury class at One Lap of America, which serves as the perfect opportunity to demonstrate its performance capabilities as well as those of the BMW Performance Center instructors,” said Dan Gubitosa, BMW Performance Center Manager. The BMW M6 is available at all authorized US BMW Centers and is part of the M fleet available for participants to drive in the M School and Advanced M School. In addition, the BMW Performance Center will be providing the One Lap of America staff with official vehicles for 2013.

During the event we'll be busy providing regular updates to this thread, including photos and video of our on-track activities. We'll also tweet updates with hashtag #OneLapM6

Should be fun to see how it does.

I was out at the shakedown session for TopSpeeds new OLOA car on Monday at Roebling. They are back to back to back champions of OLOA

wow, really cool. Let's see how this overweight beast stacks up against the rest.

I'm not sure how comparable the year-to-year data are, but I'm also interested to see how it compares to the E92 M3 and the old E6X M5/6

On Our Way to South Bend - May 2nd

So the day has finally arrived and Mike & I are now heading north to South Bend for our 5th One Lap of America together. This year’s event will take competitors to many well know race tracks in the eastern states; Talladega Grand Prix Raceway, Daytona Speedway, VIR, Beaverun, and CMP. At each track we’ll run at least two timed sessions, usually over three laps against the clock. A complete run down of tracks are listed at the end of this post. Admission is usually free, so come and show your support all the BMW teams if your in the area.

Each year we’ve had an opportunity to drive some of BMW’s finest machinery; E90 M3, X6 M, 335d, M5, and this year, a new BMW M6 Coupe with only has 2768 miles on the odometer. We are competing in the luxury and stock class which means the M6 is essentially exactly in the same spec as you would drive off the lot of your favorite BMW Center. We’re even rolling on stock street tires which have to last the entire event. So not only do we have to be fast, but we also need to conserve tires… sounds like present day Formula 1. In stock class the only modifications allowed are high temperature brake fluid and performance brake pads. So we’ll just have utilize the 560hp BMW gave us and Mike’s driving talents to mix it with some of the other highly modified cars.

In the Luxury Class we’ll be competing against fellow BMW competitors Dan & Ben Schaut and Robin Sparrow & Robert Grace in M3s’s. Other entrants include a Mercedes AMG C63 and a Porsche Panamera. For the Stock Class competition comes in the form of a JCW Mini Cooper and a couple of Chevrolet HHR’s.

While it’s always nice to compete for class wins, we really want to put the M6 up against the heavy hitters which this year includes numerous Nissan GTR’s, Corvettes, Vipers, and Porsches, plus an Aston Martin and Jaguar XKR also thrown into the mix.

During the events we’ll be loading the M6 up with video cameras to record Mike’s on-track exploits with the intention of uploading the video excerpts to YouTube as quickly as possible. You can also follow us for quick updates via twitter with hashtag #OneLapM6.

The 2013 One Lap of America got underway at 8:30 this morning with the traditional Wet Skid Pad event at Tire Rack’s Headquarters in South Bend, Indiana. Usually we’re greeted with cool temperatures and occasional showers, but for a change we had bright sunny skies and a large crowd was on hand to watch the competition unfold. This particular test requires each competitor to drive two laps of the 200ft wet skid pad in a clockwise direction followed by a further two laps in an anticlockwise direction, with the your result determined by the combined G’s of the two runs.

Our BMW Performance Center Driving School BMW M6 driven by Mike Renner completed the test with an average speed of 34mph, equating to 0.76G’s, placing us in 2nd position in Luxury Class behind the highly modified Mercedes Benz C230 and 19th overall. Once our run was over, we packed up the car and headed south to Grissom Air Force Base for the Autocross competition which starts at noon.

We’ll return to the skid pad in eight days for the final challenge of the 2013 One Lap of America, sans the water, assuming the weather cooperates and rain stays away.

Here's a video:

Conclusion of Day 1

Trying to catch up after two busy days so I'll make this brief and let the autocross video entertain you. At the end of Saturday our BMW M6 had fared extremely well on the wet skid pad and autocross to place us 25th overall and equal first on points in the Luxury class, which was a satisfactory conclusion to day 1. The 550 miles drive from Indianapolis to Birmingham was pretty miserable for everyone as the band of heavy rain stayed with us for just about the entire way.

The second day of the One Lap of America saw competitor compete at Talladega Grand Prix Raceway, just down the road from Talladega Speedway and Alabama International Dragway, and not only were we going to be battling each other for honors, there was battle against the elements to get all runs completed prior to the expected rain in the afternoon.

After a quick 50 mile drive from our Holiday Inn hotel in Birmingham, past the rain drenched campers at the speedway, we arrived to bright sunny skies at TGP. The track is really more suited to bikes than cars, but we always enjoy coming to the track, the staff are friendly, the layout offers …, though the track surface is a little on the abrasive side and we have to make our tires last for the entire week, so we have to be a little conservative and tame our aggression.

The morning session got underway at 8:30 with Leh Keen and Catesby Jones setting the fasted times, 3:02.942 and 3:04.863 respectively in their modified Nissan GTR’s. We were in the fourth group along with our longtime rival Ben Schaut who consistently puts down some very impressive times no matter what the track, in their slightly modified E90 M3 with 650 hp on tap. Mike beat Ben by just over four hundredths of a second; 3:22.408 vs 3:2.861. Good for first in Luxury class and 12th O/A.

We know had a break until 12:15pm for the second trials to begin and the concern was if the weather would hold so we would get a second dry run. Although we felt a few drops during our down time, the rain did stay away, though the dark skies kept us all guessing all the way to the green flag. This afternoon Ben returned the favor just edging Mike out 3:22.258 to 3:24.146.
The net result of these two trials left Dan & Ben Schaut level with us on points in the Luxury class, though they lead with time difference of just over 4 seconds.
As soon as we had loaded up the M6 and departed the track the heavens opened up and it was pretty apparent that the drag races would be cancelled given the heavy rain we encountered on the way to Alabama International Dragway. After 20 minutes a quick discussion with Brock and the facilities team resulted in cancellation of the races. Immediately on the news reaching the crews, we were packed up and making our way to I-20 south, with the New Orleans Crowne Plaza as our destination. Tomorrow NOLA.

The fourth day of 2013 One Lap of America offered a new experience for a most One Lap competitors; NOLA Motosports Park, just 30 minutes outside New Orleans is an impressive 2.8 mile new track with amazing facilities including a kart track and conference facilities. The staff are first class and really did everything they could to make us welcome.
The battle for Luxury Class honors continued between the Schauts in their 650hp E90 M3 and us, with Mike just easing out a win in the morning, and Ben returning the favor in the second session. Behind us the Robin & Richard continue to fight for third place with Bill Treffert & Andrew Myers in their Porsche Panamera Turbo.
After NOLA we headed east towards Daytona and made good time along I-10, but a decision to take a diagonal route to Daytona rather than staying on the interstate to Jacksonville cost us some time as the state highways were lined with deer munching grass by the side of the road. We wondered if the grass really tasted better along the road, or they were just waiting to commit suicide and jump in front of an oncoming vehicle! We eventually arrived at our Holiday Inn around 12:30am.

After catching a few hours sleep were up and off driving a few miles down the road to the home of the Rolex 24 hour race, Daytona International Speedway. Two runs were scheduled for today and we were very curious as to what speed our BMW Performance Center Driving School/Crowne Plaza M6 could attain on the oval.

In the morning session we completed the three laps in 6:22.131, just ahead of our Luxury class rivals Dan & Ben Schaut who broke the timing light at 6:25.567. This placed us 11th overall for this session with the Schauts a further 3 places behind. For reference the fastest lap recorded in this session was Catesby Jones with a 5:51.684 in his highly modified Nissan GTR.

During the second session Mike had an opportunity to glance at the heads-up and saw 180 mph as he passed through the tri-oval and the M6 was still accelerating, but with turn 1 looming he had to keep his eyes firmly ahead as he set the M6 up for the breaking zone before turning into the infield section, so couldn’t observe the actual top speed reached. He did comment after that M6 just wanted to keep on accelerating even at that speed. So we finished the second time trial 11th overall with a time of 6:21.417, slightly quicker than this morning.

At the conclusion of our run we immediately packed up the car and headed off to the passage control at Grassroots Motorsports office where the staff was kind enough to provide goody bags for everyone.

On the road again, we headed north towards Kershaw, South Carolina for Wednesday’s two time trails at Carolina Motorsports Park, though we had a small detour planned to Critz BMW as the owner Neil Critz had invited us to stop by for a Low Country Boil and meet guests of his dealership.

There's an E90 in the field. Basically neck and neck as of the time of this post --

http://onelapofamerica.com/event/Cum...Luxury%20Sedan

I'm not sure of the extent of the modifications on the E90.
