M Ceramic brakes

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I don't take it to the track but I do drive quite quickly late at night if the roads are empty and sometimes I can lightly cook my brakes.

Are the ceramics really that much better than the standard brakes?

The cost issue isn't too important but I've been told they can squeal worse than a pig.

Try to test drive one with CCB. I also heard a lot of stories, test drove previous generation S8 with CCB and was completely satisfied by those brakes! No strange sounds at all, outside temperature was ~ -3 degrees C..

I test drove a F13 M6 in April 2012, which had ceramic brakes, and it did squeal all the time, and was very loud. I do not have ceramic brakes in my car, and the brakes almost never squel. The way to get rid of the squeal is to periodically slam on the brakes. Something else to consider is that the ceramic brakes work best when warm, so they are not great in stop and go traffic. But they do weigh less than the standard brakes, and last longer. And maybe, since then, BMW has made improvements to lessen the squealing problem with the ceramic brakes. Even if I had the option of getting ceramic brakes, the standard brakes worked best for me, along with the 19" wheels, since I live in NYC. Hope that helps.

I know someone who worked for a auto marketing company that BMW uses/used. He has driven the F13 equipped with Carbon Ceramics for quite an extended amount of time a few times,(alot of miles) and one of the questions I asked him was if the brakes squeaked. His response was, "No".

Maybe it depends on the conditions or situation but he had no complaints about it.

I had an afternoon driving the car, and it was very noticeable. I remember thinking that anyone who gets the carbon ceramic brakes would be unhappy with the noise. Maybe in a race environment the rotor do not experience the buildup, so the squeal is reduced.

Also, going back to the original post, on a daily basis I hit over 100+ mph in my car, and the standard brakes work great.

Considering you're in NYC and the car I'm referring to is in NJ. Was the car you had for the afternoon black on black ?

My standard brakes are awesome too but I can't help but wonder what carbons are like. I guess it's also a vanity thing for me, the gold calipers do look great and tell people you've spent that little extra.

Good luck with the squealing. I've had very bad squealing on the standard brakes on my M6 and the shop foreman at the dealership said it would even be worse with ceramic brakes.
