Our initial exposure to the 6 Gran Coupe leaves us with a positive vibe—it looks fantastic and is very tastefully executed—but there are alternatives. BMW likes to consider the Mercedes-Benz CLS, the Porsche Panamera, and the Aston Martin Rapide as competitors, although we’d say the A7 and Jaguar’s XF and XJ are more akin to this new 6-series than the Aston in particular.

Of course, there also is BMW’s own 5-series should you want essentially the same car minus the sultry sheetmetal. It comes down to taste—and price.

Details like these make the 2013 BMW 640i Gran Coupe an easier car to own — or an easier one to justify — even if it takes an indulgent trip through the options catalog to reproduce.

But even without a trailer-load of extras, this highly stylish four-door coupe has to be one of the best cars in BMW's armory. It's pleasing to look at, endlessly entertaining from behind the wheel and surprisingly devoid of compromises. It's as though BMW took its time to perfect the four-door coupe instead of merely rushing out a new model to get a stake in the game. If only it could take so long with all of its new models.

In short, the 6-series Gran Coupé is a belter – better to look at and drive than the 5-series, if not possessing quite the same level of practicality and load-carrying ability. With a sporting interior, it also feels special to be in. The question now is: why would you want a 6-series coupé?

Like the CLS and the A7, it is a car for extrovert drivers rather than those who prefer to mingle in the crowd. And as Mercedes-Benz and Audi have discovered, there are plenty of those in North America. With this in mind, success for BMW’s latest sedan seems almost assured, even at a cool $76,895 for the entry-level 640i Gran Coupe.

It will be interesting to see how the rivals will survive against BMW's great line up of new sedans: 3 series, 5 series, 6 series GC and the 7 series LCI!

What upcoming M7? If you are thinking M Performance? Then it will be a Diesel. The 6er wil also gain the prospect of an M650d.

There will be neither. The 4-series GC will be out in a couple of years, and there are rumors of a 2-series GC, but it's still at the internal discussion stage at this point.

Autobild has confirmation for the M7 and M6 Grand Coupe from BMW.

M6 Gran Coupe and BMW M Performance 7er - No M7.

It is refreshing to see how the media really like the car compared to the thrashing Audi are receiving over their non-communicative Performance S6 and S7 models. This is why BMW always do things right , they might lack in performance either in horse power or a end high sports car , but they always maintain a customer base for the best product out there.

I think the gran coupe will outsell the 6 coupe, very sleek and very practical. A great 4D alternative to the 7 series which is too big

My view is based on the Success Mercedes Benz has had with their four door coupe, the CLS. I see many of these on the road in Houston.

The real question is whether the perceived value of the new 6 will attract more of those buyers.

The car is great looking but the back seat isn't easy getting in and out of. I wouldn't want to be the guy in the back seat driving to the beach.
