I went to school for business. Got a job part way through doing graphic design. Then moved to web design and SEO maintenence. Then somehow got a job at the same company on the software side of things. Dropped out of college...wasn't learning anything and already had a job. Didn't need two more year of student loan debt.

This thread is reassuring. I hear so many people tell me that they wasted time going to college and getting a degree. I always have a small fear in the back of my mind that what I'm doing now will be meaningless in the future.
I'll be graduating with a degree in Accounting next semester. I plan on going for my Master in Accountancy or Tax (haven't decided yet). Becoming a CPA and then going back for an MBA. Keeping my fingers crossed. |

Use it under my arms every morning...keeps me dry and smelling good.
![]() Actually, BS EE and started a master in Engineering Management. I manage a software group, however, it controls hardware. I don't use the degree, but wouldn't be in the position I'm in without it. When I was with FedEx, your degree could have been in basket weaving...but if you had it, you could go anywhere.

BS in Marketing and I use my degree as a Digital Account Manager of a Digital Marketing Agency. Seems like we have a lot of web guys on here!
We are actually located like 15 mins from Helix in Manayunk! Our old partner agency shares the same building. |

And yes, when it comes to my 400 level IS courses. IS major and currently a network engineer for a fortune 500.
Edit: I HAD to have my degree to get to where I am, including a high enough GPA for the program I went into.

MS - Systems Management MS got me the interview, personality (and previously working with the person I replaced) got me the job. Logical thinking used on a daily basis. Defining limits of the interface and then solving the problem (Systems Management) used daily. |

Pharmacist.
Required to have the degree for the job I do. Spend about 75% of my working hours dealing with government or corporate paperwork or fixing problems that really shouldn't have happened in the first place. |

I have a BBA in Marketing and I've spent my entire professional life in sales. I am currently transitioning to a market development role in the medical device field. So the short answer is yes.
In any field a degree will only get you in the door. From there it is all about reputation and networking. I have several friends who work for medical device and equipment companies with varying degrees that have no connection with what they do. To give you an example, the district sales manager ($300k+ per year) for my company has a degree in history and openly talks about how he hated college. His degree got him an interview but it was his work ethic and desire to succeed that got him to where he is. |
