Cool BMW 6-series Gran Coupe Design Revealed in Patent Filing

BMW 6-series Gran Coupe Design Revealed in Patent Filing

The upcoming 6 Series Gran Coupe's exterior design has apparently been revealed in these renderings found in a BMW patent filing. This design remains fairly close to the BMW Concept Gran Coupe revealed a year ago at the Beijing Autoshow.

The front fascia loses some of its more aggressive styling bits such as the aggressive side intake inlets in favor of the production 6-series bumper. The wheels have also been sized down for practical purposes.

Expect the 6 Series Gran Coupe to feature the same range of engines as the current 6-series coupe and convertible.

Based on previously info, we've tentatively pegged its debut to be sometime mid-next year.

Update, according to SCOTT26:

The Patent images were uploaded prior to the Concept. So these are at least two years old.
The BMW management insisted on some visual changes to differentiate the Gran Coupe from the Coupe and Cabrio models.

Not more than a 4 door 6-series! . . . wondering why BMW design amazing concepts but not production models!

Beside I hope BMW will not bring that 6-series coupe sunroof for the Gran Coupe as it's only tilt able but not slide able which is useless IMO.

It just isnt possible to include all the cool features of a concept in the production - regulations and cost are limitations.

The dull colors and lighting of the images make the car look boring, it will look better in real life

Not really, but yeah, if anything it would be the other way around since the F10 has more utility (seats three in back instead of just two, and has more rear head room). However, by extending that logic, we could also say that a sedan also defeats the purpose of a coupe, or that a touring defeats the purpose of a sedan.

In other words, yes, clearly this gives up a little utility in trade for what is intended to be more exciting styling. But that tradeoff has existed for decades in the automotive world - nothing new here.

Which shouldn't come as a surprise. If I'm not mistaken, BMW models generally cost more than a competing Mercedes model. So whether it be 2k or 10k, you're looking to pay more regardless of model.

As for the Gran Coupe, when it was first posted a while back, it looked amazing and cool but looking at it today, I'm asking myself "why?". The 6-series to me was the sporty model but adding 2 more doors, it takes that away and I'm wondering why would you get that if you could have a 5 series which is probably the better car overall.

This has potential IMO. They should differentiate it more though. Like make the roofline really low or something. The headlights look too small though. We'll just have to wait and see though.

Not sure if you're serious, but it's a design patent.

Best regards,

The pictures are indeed taken from the Patent database. As I said if you have access you know where to find everything. But you need access and that is monitored.

The Patent images were uploaded prior to the Concept. So these are at least two years old.
The BMW management insisted on some visual changes to differentiate the Gran Coupe from the Coupe and Cabrio models.

The Gran Coupe will get a different aerodynamics packet to the Coupe and Convertible , very similar to the original Concept. It's all about extending exclusivity.

The Gran Coupe 6er will be the flagship for the 6er and inside they have done some changes. Although the main layout is the same , the flowing design stretches back to the rear cabin via the doors and centre console allowing a coccooned environment and individual passenger seats.
This can be trimmed in two-tone materials if optioned and of course Individual will be available for a more exclusive look to your Gran Coupe.

Gran Coupe will also receive an option of a glass electro-chromatic roof similar to the Mercedes-Benz SLK where the glass can be darkened by the touch of a button. The rear passengers also get their own floating flatscreen monitors on the back of the rear seats.

It looks stunning in light metallics such as Titanium Silver showcasing all the visual details. But Dark metallics are equally at home.

The Gran Coupe is expected to have it's world premiere two years on from it's original China preview. And debut at the 2012 Beijing Autoshow.

You are distracted by the smaller wheels which really make the car look heavy.

In real life the Gran Coupe is lower than the 3er , 5er and 7er. Even the 3er Coupe.

They already made something "between" the 5 and 7 series, it's called the F10.

Interesting. How are you comparing? Those are probably estimates rounded but for are you comparing xDrive models to 4Matic models (where applicable?). I compared it that way (with the exception of the C-Class/3-Series since the C-Class has models without 4Matic) here in Canada, the 3-Series, 5-Series were at least 1k more expensive than the C-Class and E-class. I found that the S-Class is more expensive than the 7-Series regardless of model.

I didn't want to go through the whole lineup for both mfg. but at least here in Canada, BMW's are a bit more expensive than Mercedes. (And that's not considering bang/buck which I think BMW is really bad at...)
