"How many miles ago did you last have those exhaust tips clean and shiny?" That is the way they looked when I purchased, tried to clean off the black, but no real luck.

Try this.
I initially cleaned mine with one of these in an electric drill. The wire on this one was fairly soft, and I didn't go at it too hard so as not to scratch the inner lining of the pipes. Followed this up with a cloth buffing wheel coated with Solvol Autosol (liquid chrome cleaner) or somwething similar. Once you've got the heavy cr*p off, regular wiping down makes it much easier to keep clean. |

Well 10 days and 539 miles later the warning came on. Not sure that when I went to dealer on March 11 they put in 1 quart or 2. Waiting to hear from my service adviser.
BMWrog, how does that not scratch??

next time if they attempt to put 2 quarts, leave the car there and threaten legal action. you cannot guauge consumption like this.
the correct method by BMW is to weigh the oil between 2 readings. have they done that? |

Wow. Can't believe the oil consumption is still crazy on this car. I needed a quart every 1k miles with my previous M6 (07), I thought maybe they would have figured this out by now.

The bristles on the brass coloured wire brushes are comparatively soft compared to your basic hard steel ones. I did say not to go at it too hard! The insides of the standard exhaust tips are not exactly highly polished, but using this kind of brush LIGHTLY, will get off the hard baked on cr*p. Then you use the cloth buffing wheel with a slightly abrasive paste, e.g. T-Cut, Solvol Autosol, etc., and you will ultimately get a nice smooth reasonably shiny surface which is easy to keep clean, and looks good. The inside of the standard tips will never be a mirror finish, unless you get 'em plated, but they'll look better than average.
We've had some pretty wet and dirty wet weather here recently so my car's filthy, but when I get it clean I'll try and remember to take a pic of the pipes and post it... |

I spoke with a lawyer who is running the N63 class action. As the second owner he would not take the case. Also, leaving the car as a threat is only going to get the car towed at my expense. I can always live with it an take free oil as long as it doesn't get worse. Will continue to monitor.

Bobz007 - That's for the N63, not the S63 best I can tell.

I would honestly sell the car. I have gone through 3 quarts in 15,000 miles on my M5. I have NEVER had a car that burned oil like yours is.

I really have trouble understanding how BMW can stick to their position that this much oil usage is within the "normal" range for this engine, when presumably so many other M cars with this engine aren't burning much if any oil. I would be very frustrated, but that's the approach of most major car manufacturers when faced with a very costly decision to issue a TSB, customer "campaign" or even a recall. The $$ frequently outweigh the customer concerns and car longevity. Well, my rant on your behalf is done Best of luck on your search. |

You could consider shaming them into doing something. Call your local newspaper and TV stations and try to get them to do a story about. Craft a well written summary of your experience and their response and post it on every website and blog involving BMW you can think of. If you can give them enough of a black eye to get their attention, they would rather take care of you than continue to experience the bad press.

Service staff is supportive, and they want me to pressure BMW. As a lawyer I have thought of suing as well.

Spoke with BMW USA yesterday, they see the notes from before, and claim they will escalate. Will keep everyone posted.
If it needs a new engine, that means a long week in a loaner....

So BMW USA called yesterday, they said they are working with the dealership. My service adviser said the next time the oil warning comes on to immediately bring car to dealer. So depending on how much oil they put in last week during the service (9 or 10) it will be either 575 or 1,150 miles, 2 to 4 weeks. What test they will run or do is unknown, but at least something is happening.
