I'm currently on my forth vehicle that has an N55 engine and I've zero problems. It's the reason why I keep going back to them.

I think people with bad experiences about N55 may got a lemon car. I own a F13 640i 12 (70k mileages), got dealer replace all gaskets before the warranty expired. Along that, my family also have 2 F10 535i ( 2011 and 2014). The N55 has proved its reliability to me, just trade in the 2011 for a 2015 X5 s35i. I usually do my own repair and my own maintenance. However, I agree that 640i and 650i are not in the same league. I always wish N63 to be more reliable so that I can own one, maybe wait for series 8 then.

To the posts regarding nimbleness.

Have a 640i GC now, coming from an E92 335i LCI.
With adaptive drive and IAS, I go through corners at same speed or higher than I used to with the 335i. Except it feels faster and more alive E92.

I have driven F10s without AD and they did feel more heavy and sluggish.

I've had my 640i GC for over 3 years now, I haven't had any issues, only the pulley tensioner malfunctioned somehow two years ago, very strange thing to happen after 5k. It was replaced and no issues since then. I love the car, it was initially tough to getting used to coming from an X5 but after while
I loved it. With the N55, the power is enough for me for the everyday driving, although it's a heavy car but it can really move and handle well around corners. I would recommend it over 430GC any time for the exterior shape and also the interior.

BMW does not make the most reliable cars.

If you want a reliable car, there are many others to choose from such as Honda, Toyota, Nissan.

Then, go buy a BMW Roundel and stick it on the hood.
