I just switched over to my winter set up with 18" Dunlop Winter 3D RFTs. No doubt, now that I have an immediate back-to-back, the Hankook 20" 35/30 series (non-RF) tires have less impact harshness than the 45 series RF winter tires - running at a lower pressure!

There is just no way I will EVER accept RFTs on another car. I am okay with them for winter use. But I think on my next car I am going with an ultra high performance A/S. I am sick of the changeover, and the summer performance sacrifice is negligible given the cost savings of two sets of shoes plus the hassle of the change. I don't track my car nor do I drive in super deep snow so I can tolerate the compromise.

I ended up going with the Conti DWS tires on the stock 20" rims. The ride is much nicer however the car has lost some of its sportiness (steering is now lighter and car does not seem to handle as well). Overall, I didn't HATE the RFTs - but they were not going to work in the winters and I could not find 19s.

Despite what I wrote about RFTs earlier this year, as the OEM Dunlops aged they became bumpy, noisy and unbearable. My Ford F350 ran smoother.

So when they were close to worn out, I switched to Michelin Pilots, OEM size on my 20 inch M-Sport wheels. Driving became a pleasure once more - way smoother and quieter and just as grippy, if not more so.

Tomorrow I too will be switching to my winter 18 inch RFTs. It will be interesting to see if I find the same as Bonz. But I will keep putting on winter tires - I live in a fairly remote area, need to drive in cold weather and like the relative safety of RFTs on a cold winter night far from help! Snow is not really an issue with X Drive, but a softer compound is important for braking as well as lateral grip.
