sunroof

Why didn't BMW designed the sunroof to retract on the GC? It seems there is enough room to at least retract halfway.

Think it had to do with the slope of the roof. Very rounded so not conducive to a retracting flat piece of glass.

Also don't get that design - plenty of cars with curved roofs and retracting windscreens - they simply pop up and back.

And looks horribly cheap.. BMW knows not to put something like that on a close to $100k car, they would rather not have it retract at all. They should have had the glass retract into the roof itself but they are cutting corners like MB because their sales numbers are so high, it's like they don't need to try and push cars anymore.

I hate that it doesn't retract. I'd take the odd look of the glass popping up and back versus no movement other then a mere tilt

The Porsche 911 sunroof pops up and goes back doesn't look that bad.

They should have had a carbon roof option for the 650! I could care less about a heavy glass roof so I can see stars, comets, and unicorns, I just wanna go fast!

BMW did it for the same reason BMW did not make the video display retractable on their new cars that have a tablet type device: because BMW knows you'll buy the damn car anyway.

the only retractable roof I've had and really enjoyed is the one in my 530xi T. It's huge and useful only at speeds below 50 as it gets too loud. I don't miss the roof being the way it is on my GC one bit and will gladly sacrifice OP's wishes for style. I had a '91 Honda Prelude whose roof retracted over the top of the car-it looked like ass.

I've got to disagree on the moonroof. I love it. Gorgeous piece of glass. Gives the entire interior a airy, bright appearance.Tilt up, is sufficent. If it was made to slide back, it would have to be much smaller. One reason I didn't not want a M6, I don't want a black piece of carbon fiber above my head.

i love the big glass panel, looks so much better in vent mode and it's much bigger than any sunroof that retracts in the roof. I wouldn't say it's cutting corners to me it looks kind of premium. Wish BMW put on the 4 series too.

I love the design as is. The large glass that you get is bright and very open feeling. And, supposedly, this was done to protect decreased headroom in the back due to an already aggressively plunging roof line. The track mechanisms that ultimately get consealed by the headliner would have reduced rear interior clearance. I also don't care to have the wind sound drown out the amazing B&O audio.
