has anyone gotten the ASD disabled?

the enhanced sound effect thing from the speakers... I thought our M6s didn't have it as where the M5s did. I'm considering the Turner muffler delete and would like to know if the ASD thing is easy to disable.

I thought I traced a thread earlier that tracked down the absence of any reference to the F06 M6 Gran Coupe on the US parts references for the ASD modules. But I can't find that easily.

I hope it's true, as I would also like to delete. I want to just live with whatever noise the car is actually making in real time, not what this car or a better one might have sounded like at some point in the past. But maybe they "fixed" the M6GC for 2016 and added that module.

I will take a look at this on weekend to see if the M6 has this amplifier and how it affects if I remove it...

Are you talking about the active sound? If yes, then coding can remove this feature on the M6.

Yes I am talking about Active Sound, but I want to disconnect the physical cable instead of coding... I'm an old school guy lol

I thought you did that...trunk, drivers side ASD module under the carpet? I'd be interested in seeing the difference too and was going to follow the directions you had posted.

We both can do it on weekend and let's see what's the difference since you have aftermarket exhaust and I have the stock one

I'm stunned they did this. Over all the years I have been around cars I have always thought BMW to be at the forefront of a lot of automotive development. But this seems like something some ad guy would dream up. Then again, the way a lot of you guys seem so focused on the way an exhaust system sounds rather than on how much it improves performance I can understand the motivation. Sure is different than in my early car days, but variety is one thing that makes the world better.

I would also like to add my thanks to all of you that focus on the way it sounds. I am sure that your desires have contributed greatly to the reason the Akrapovic system on my car sounds so great. I don't think I have ever had an exhaust system that sounded so much like a true race car in all the years I have been hopping up cars. My sincere thanks. Because of you all my car sounds like it runs. Actually it is very nice, but these days I am getting old and more inclined towards cush - and that includes inside the car. I'd love to be able to have easier conversations (not as much "what did you say?") and hear the stereo more clearly without having to turn it up so loud. Of course, after all this now you guys will tell me I am hearing things and the ASD is not on my car.

I looked at the part of the trunk where this ASD box is supposed to be located and found my setup is quite a bit different - 2014 M6 GC. I have a little storage box right under the hinge intended for a first aid kit. There is a small clip there too, between the box trim and the trunk weather strip - right next to the hinge. There is also a release for the driver side rear seat that allows it to be folded forward in the center of the wall between the fender well and the taillight. And I have 4 or 5 small and large button clips holding everything in place (not 3 - not a big deal). And it also looks like there are 2 more buttons inside that med kit compartment. As I have a strong tendency to break stuff that does not cooperate right away. For those of you old enough to remember what we did for ice before icemakers came along, I've ripped a couple of ice cube trays apart trying to get the ice out (piano since I was 8 and several decades of martial arts). So naturally I was a bit leery of getting very far into this when the clip by the hinge and the seat release were not easy to undo. I've got pics if anyone wants to see them. Are you all sure that the ASD box is underneath all that stuff? Is there any reason a dealer would not undo this for you? It's about all I could do to lean over the trunk (really bad back trouble) let alone do any of this. I could probably get one of my sons to help with it but as good as my boys are neither of them are that experienced with trim stuff and I would prefer not to break anything. It's just that I would love to have that quiet ride you guys who have done this are talking about - well until I go WOT. Then it's time for a little and to heck with the noise - that's just part of the deal.

I have read the linked threads but I still cannot believe they actually mic the exhaust on some models. Amazing! Over the years I've seen some really unusual things in cars, some incredibly stupid and others true genius, but perhaps this one takes the grand prize. Do you guys really love the sound that much? I guess I have to admit that I do too, but only when I get on it - not when I'm putzing down the highway in 7th at 1500 RPM. Come to think of it, I guess I ou ght to confess that there was a time when I used to crack my headers (a little washer between the header flange and the exhaust system) and once I put a dump pipe on my exhaust (welded a pipe with a removable cap into the exhaust right after the headers that could be uncapped when you wanted a bit more umph out of the car). Oh yeah. Guess you guys aren't so different than we were back then though we used to tell ourselves it was for the performance increase and not the noise . . . uh, great sound.

I just disconnected the connector and disabled the Amplifier, but I didn't recognize any changes. Maybe on stock Exhaust there is no difference since the cabin noise is loud enough (on M6). I believe M6 does not have the cabin noise sealing that M5 has. Let's see how this ASD works on after market exhaust. We will figure it out tomorrow on "C5driver's M6" ....
BTW, the location of Amplifier on M6 is slightly different from M5

Well I just attempted to disable the ASD because of my curiosity to see the effect of this Amplifier, but over all I care about performance more than noise. I mean exhaust noise is subjective. I don't really care if M6 exhaust noise is not as good as MB AMG (my preference noise) while I care the handling and stiffness of M6 even in Comfort mode is much better than any MB AMG I have ever driven (E, CLS, S).

Yes very easy. Takes only couple minutes
You don't need to remove the whole carpet. Just driver's side must be removed

Do you have B&O? Is it true that if you have B&O then just disconnecting the ASD module will disable all sound?

I just disabled on mine, could definitely tell a difference. It was a bit too quiet, so I then wired open the exhaust valves. That made it a bit better, but overall it could definitely use more sound.

So if you have stock exhaust (even comp package), consider leaving it enabled. With the top down and exhaust valves wired open it's actually ok, but with the top up it's really quiet.

RichardP - I have B&O, no change to any of the sounds.

But did you unplug the module or code it using F021?
