Middle Child Syndrome?

I feel like the 6 Series gets a bad rap as a compromise between the 5 Series and the 7 Series.

Not at all - I see the 5 series as the family car = perfect blend of sportiness and practicality - the 7 series is a luxury product aimed for the affluent being driven or the driver wishing to give their family the best in value and luxury motor driving.

However the 6 GC lives in this world - where you the driver wants a coupe, the sporty look, sporty drive and still want to stuff ppl in the back on a regular basis.

Its a mash between both - and good compromise yes - bad compromise - NEVER! Drive it ! and you will see!

While I haven't had the chance to drive the 6 (yet), just looking at it makes me question how it was pinned between the 5 and the 7. I see the coupe and the gc as the most stunning designs BMW offers.

I wonder how many people shift up from considering the 5, or shift "down" from the 7? Or is it in a completely different arena?

Not only is the 6 the best looking car in BMW's lineup.. But it is one of the best looking cars on the road... I wouldn't call it a compromise at all..

The 6 isn't really between the 5 and 7. It's a 2-door 7er on a 5 series platform. A similarly equipped 6er costs more than a 7er. The 5 platform is there primarily for the size of the car. The 6er has the same materials as the high-end 7 but with more dramatic styling.

It's also about the driving experience. Look at the specs. The roof of my 6GC is 3 inches lower than the 5-series. Driving a 5 series through the corners means a lot of body roll. The 6 is totally different. I've owned both a 5 series and 6 series. The 6 series driving experience is much more rewarding to me.

They say the driving experience (steering feel especially) of the GC is the best of the 5,6,7 series. So I think the middle child rocks.

You're right, Doug 999! I've owned 5, 6, 7 and 8s and this GC is the best handler, except maybe for 2 door coupe.

I've owned (in this order) 645sport, 750sport, 535xMsport, 640GCxMsport. As soon as I saw they offered a 4 door AWD 6, I was in. The 7 is a road yacht and really shouldn't be compared to a 5 or 6. I don't drive my cars very hard so I can't comment on true performance characteristics, but I am surprised how overall similar the GC is to my old 5. IMO you are paying for appearance, style and luxury.

I disagree, IMO 6 gets the best of 5 and 7 combined and more.

Not sure I would agree with this at all. As C&D says

"We’d guess that few people climb into a BMW 5-series and say to themselves, “You know, I like it. I just wish it had less space inside.” "

" This example’s base price of $91,095 makes it not only $25,200 more expensive than a mechanically identical 550i xDrive but $400 pricier than a 750i xDrive. While those accustomed to paying for cosmetic surgery might not balk at that premium, to us it seems like an awfully high price for beauty."

I would agree it is the best looking and from what the reviews say, the best handling, but it does not take the best of the 5 and 7 (space and comfort).

I personally wouldn't buy a 5 I see 50 a day, and they look like a bigger 3 when seen in profile so add another 100 of those daily LOL. It may be mechanically identical but Ive driven both they don't drive alike. The 7 is nice but not at all sporty. Its comfortable but I get really board driving them.. Same deal as E class VS CLS

I am still noodling the series numbering...

That said, I think the 6GC should be the ultimate driving machine 5 series, and even numbered cars two door coupes, with four odd numbered. I guess as long as BMW's strange approach to brand and model management keeps selling more cars, they'll pass on my input for rational model numbering.

The 6 easily has the nicest bmw interior, the 6 gc is the nicest bmw period. If I was spending that kind of money though, I think I'll leave bmw (but it doesn't mean I'm not impressed every time I see a 6)

The 5 Series is a boring large family sedan and the 7 Series is a defined, larger version of the 5 Series. The 6 Series is an exciting car! Coupe and the convertible. Can't speak for the Gran Coupe.

Middle child? I'd say the 6 is at best a cousin to the rest of the BMW line. The hot cousin that's tons of fun. While people may be choosing between a 5, a 7, or a 6GC, the coupe is an "I want that car" kind of car.

I know that's why I got one.

The BMW 6 series (GC), MB CLS Class (new S class coupe), and Audi 7 series are the most style and concept driven vehicles in their respective brands. (save the supercar segment)

They are in no way a compromise, unless your talking about utility.

I see the 7 as an older persons car or one that's more focused on occupants in back seat . One that wants a large car, soft ride and ton of space. No offense to those with 7's!

I view the 5 as more of a family car. Someone striving for more than a 3, but not wanting to extend into 6 or 7 pricing.

6 is more of a GT sedan. Low, wide, aggressive. Perfect for modest size families - essentially a 2+2 even though can seat 3 in back.

Price point of 6 is not dissimilar of a 7 once you option up, so similar "class".
