Looking at a 640i GC, coming from a X6 50i
I am contemplating a 640GC, absolutely love the style of the 6 series, especially the GC, however the deal I found is for a 640, this is considerably less power than in my X6 50. Just wondering if any owners found the 640 to be underpowered or frustrated by lack of power. It's not like I use all the power that often, but always nice knowing it's there
Thanks in advance! |

I don't feel it is underpowered at all. I drove the CLS550, and 650i GC before the 640 and the power delivery is about the same. You won't have the same top end power, but it doesn't lack power for the weight of the car. You can always get the Burger tune, which gets you close to 400hp/400tq

On the contrary, the GC will feel more powerful (if that's the right word) vis-a-vis your X6. Here's why. Your X6 50i weighs over 5200 lbs, and makes max torque of 4500 @ 1750 rpm, which is fabulous, but your car is over FIVE THOUSAND POUNDS! Now, the 640 GC comes in at about 4200 lbs (or 1000 pounds lighter) and makes max torque of 330, and it reaches max torque earlier at 1300 rpm. So that sensation of snap-your-neck back adrenaline rush you want is at least as equal to, if not greater, in the GC when compared to the X6. X650i v. 640i GC Weight 5200 4200 Torque 450 330 @ RPM 1750 1300 Yes, we all know the GC gives up about 75 horses to the X6, but real men know that while HP is nice to brag about, the real fun comes from torque, and the GC is no slouch in that respect. |

It's more complicated than that. The point about the 1000lb difference is most significant. But you have to take into account transmission and final drive gearing. It's rear wheel torque and vehicle mass that make a car feel the way it does.
As far as engine output, you must consider the area under the torque curve, not just the point where the peak begins, as the sensation of acceleration is a dynamic consideration. Also, the torque curves we all refer to are max output, at full throttle under load. Since we are seldom driving like that, the sensation of a powerful car is part throttle torque at the rear wheels as the engine revs and the gears change. Of course, generally speaking a stronger engine in a lighter car is going have more "seat push". But a lot of what one feels is the 2nd derivative of velocity or the time-rate-change of acceleration - which is influenced by all the aforementioned dynamic factors, not the least of which is engine design. Last point is horsepower. ICEs and electric motors for that matter only produce torque. HP is nothing but a calculation based on the time rate change of torque. Yes it's fun to talk about how torque gets you off the line and HP is for top speed, but it all goes back to the shape-of and area-under the torque curve. With variable cam timing and valve lift, modern engines generate fatter and flatter torque curves than previously possible. |

With that being said, we had a '11 X6 35 prior at the same time as the '13 X6 50. The X6 50 and X6 35 felt marginally different off the line. Can't beat the growl of the 8, but the 6 sounded very aggressive nonetheless and felt nearly as fast to 60. I think you'll not be disappointed with a 640i. Very aggressive looking sedan and plenty of get up and go, we get a ton of compliments. |

This car is longer and wider than the 5, but not as functional as a 5 or X6. There's not much room. It's really enough to seat 4 adults. If you're taller than 6ft, the rear passengers will not have much leg room. If you're looking for practicality, the 6 is not for you. Otherwise, I would say the 6 GC feels more luxurious than the current 7 (for the driver). The interior dash is mostly leather, the head liner is alcantara, and the large screen is amazing. The fit and finish suits what a near six figure car should be. I considered the dark side (Audi A7) and Telsa 85 before getting the 6 GC. Best decision I've made yet. Oh, I'm still not used to people staring my car and taking pictures. Not once have I seen people drooled over similar priced cars (Audi A7 or Porsche Panamera). |

I could read Bönz all day!
Thank you for very well stated explanation I went from a 535 xi to a 640 ix Vert Last week, cruising in Vt. Top down, windscreen up. Wanted to see acceleration potential. From "speed limit" on I-89 at 75 mph, pulled into the left lane and put my foot down. In a ridiculously short amount of time backed off when she hit 110. Smooth , quiet , felt the same as at 65! Took quite a while to coast back down to 75. Oh, BTW, I was still in "Comfort"!!! Don't think she's lacking power or acceleration. |

I just went from a 550i (F10) to the 640i, it does not feel underpowered.
From 0 to 60 I can not tell the difference, is from 80 to 100 that I feel the difference, but is not a big deal. I am very happy with the 640i, is sport first and luxury second, no utility. the best seat in the car is the drivers seat, the passenger fron seat is a little tight on the legs, and the rear seat while usable is not big on head room or comfort. I love the 640i and do not miss the v8 at all, I believe the N55 on the 640 is mpre than 315HP, it feels a lot more than a 535i. Last edited by paulbazo; 06-22-2014 at 09:46 AM.. |

I can't answer the power question but..
I can tell you I love being back in a car (came from an X6 50i myself). I do miss the Adaptive Drive (so would have ordered that if I had ordered the car instead of taking from dealer stock). I also think that regarding some comments here, the 640 is probably a more responsive car to drive (at least from a handling aspect). The 650xi GC is something like 4,600 lbs so while lighter than the 5,200 X6 50i, it is still a really heavy car.
In short, I don't think you will be disappointed - except with the sound. It was yummy in the X6 and dare I say even more so in the GC.
