Initial impressions of a 2017 Alpina B6 GC

Enclosed in no particular order are my initial impressions of 384 miles during a quick Euro Delivery last week.

The vehicles in my Garage are my frame of reference.

1. Looks, fit and finish: Tastefully done by both BMW and Alpina. The items Alpina added are impressive.

2. Weight: it's heavy - 4780 unladen. It is an awesome highway cruiser but it could benefit from a 300-500 pound diet.

3. Power: the Engine is powerful (600hp / 590 tq) but you need to be in the right gear and above 3K revs to get near instant throttle response. I spent most of my time in Switch-Tronic (Manual mode) and downshifting via the Alpina Buttons on the back of the steering wheel. These buttons are actually very comfortable and are placed exactly where your fingers would normally rest at 9 and 3 o'clock.

4. Responsiveness: if your aren't in Manual mode and if you are lumbering at 1.5K revs the B6 is PAINFULLY slow to engage the automatic kick down and Get Going! Initial throttle response is disappointing but once the revs come up, this vehicle flys.

5. Suspension, tracking and braking: for a heavy vehicle was impressive. It's well planted on the road with AWD and 255/35 and 295/30 ZR20 Michelin Super Sports. It retains hydraulic steering and the road feedback was good. Disks are 14.7"/14.6" and worked well bringing the vehicle down from autobahn speeds. Bottom Line, it's a fun highway cruiser.

6. Driver aids and cameras: Needed since this is a big vehicle with a chopped greenhouse. This vehicle will take some time getting used to the size and limited visibility. Driving in Europe was a challenge.

7. Seating comfort: seats are hard (surprising) but we eventually got them right. Back seats are for people under 5'-10".

I welcome your thoughts and feedback.

Cheers,

Chris

Hey Andy! It was great meeting you too! Thanks for your comments, how's your F80 M3? I trust they will do an excellent job. Bet you can't wait to get it back home and on the track!

Kind regards, Chris

Mine has been sitting in Bremerhaven for past 6 days.
If yours hasn't sipped yet maybe we will be on the same boat

The wait is going to be brutal but it will get here eventually

Best regards,

I agree with all of your feedback (especially the sluggish part and hard seats) thus it sounds very much like my 650GC XI. I'm certainly ready for a smaller, more responsive car after 2.5 years! I do love taking it out on date night however with my wife

Congrats!!

I apologize, completely forgot to get you a picture of the pedalbox. It will completely change how you currently view the car. It will give you that instant gratification on acceleration that the car very much needs.

I will get a picture taken in the morning.

Perhaps there is a "Support Group" that we can join?

Keep in touch, let's see who gets theirs first?

Best regards,

Here are the pics of the pedalbox. It is the little controller on the side of the driver's seat with the red light on. The cable is going underneath the brown trim back to the pedal. It's a 10 minute install.

Nice! Thanks for the pics - I will install mine the same way!

Nice Alpina!

Love the interior. What trim is that - just a gloss white? Looks awesome with the saddle interior.

No, never got the pedalbox, just have learned to apply heavier throttle upon takeoff which slightly compensates for initial turbo lag.

Who did you purchase pedalbox from? Cost? Is it specific for B6? Or just F06?

I'm looking at possibly leasing a 2017 B6, but the sales manager at the dealership has told me that the vehicle is displaying some jerkiness when stopped and putting the transmission into R from D. Apparently it's a known issue and not mechanical but more of a software fix. He had mentioned that Alpina is working on a fix for it right now.

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

^ krown, yes, transmission has at times been jerky but not too bad. I would say on occasion. I welcome a possible software update to resolve.

Interesting to see if anyone else has had the same experience.

Kind regards, Chris
