For those interested, you will have to find the numerous old threads on this. The reason why The M3/M4 got the F80/F82 chassis codes instead of using the F30/F32 is because the chassis is a lot different than the base models. (lightweight/aluminum/carbon fibre vs. steel frame). This is why the M5 and M6 use the F10 and F12/F13 codes, the chassis itself isn't that much different from my understanding. The frame is still more/less the same as the 5er and 6er but the suspension is tuned for a M car.

The reason BMW is now incrementing the letter code for each new generation of cars is because, with so many models now, and with each form factor getting a unique number, there aren't enough numbers to fit two generations comfortably within the range of two digit numeric codes (00-99).

The reason the F1x (and F06) Ms don't have a unique chassis code is simply because they started development before the change in nomenclature to use F8x for all M vehicles. It will be interesting to see what they do next generation because it is very possible there will be more than ten distinct M products. Had the M5/M6 used the F8x codes this generation, they would have had just enough: F06, F10, F12, F13, F80, F82, F83, F85, F86, F87 - that's ten (assuming no F88 M2 convertible forthcoming). However, UKL vehicles will remain Fxx even for the coming generation starting with the 1 Series, so it may be that the UKL M vehicles also use Fxx (perhaps with their own range - F6x or F7x?). That being said, even as the M2 will move to UKL, there could be X3M and X4M which will be CLAR obviously so they may still need more than ten for M on that platform. Also possible are 3GT, 4GC, 5GT M products, not to mention tourings, sports cars or super cars if you dare to dream. |
