I would not like the i8 personally because it is very small and not very luxurious compared to a 6 series. I would never call it an upgrade to an M6. It's a switch to a different type of car. I could see how it would be attractive if I wanted a small car with very sharp styling and if I was into the "green" eco mode.

The i8 sure is sleek looking, killer doors, but very tight and small for interior space.

Very cool car but felt like a step town in terms of luxury and finish ... Perhaps BMW will improve on that department ... Tesla also looked very minimalistic for fit, finish and feel.

I am interested to see what the new Porsche electric solution will end up as once into production.

But the i8 did nail the exterior for looks and cool factor

I went and got one to replace the M6. Had both side by side in the garage for about 2-3 months while I decided exactly what to do with my M6 which ironically was worth as much as a 5 series after just 21 months of ownership and 22k miles. Definitely consider it an upgrade as far as the overall vehicle, it's a special kind of car, not that the M6 isn't but it's what we've all grown to expect in a high performance GT car. Not to mention, I had been in the both modern generations of the M6 (E63, and F13) for 7 years and needed a change of scenery. One warning though, you will miss your storage space, blind spot detection, lane departure warning, and memory seats and most of all your privacy. Some of the comfort features currently missing in the i8 will most likely never make it on to the car for multiple reasons that have been discussed on the i8 side of the forums. Seems like weight and the complications of wiring and transmitting signals through the CFRP shell are the culprits. Mr.SugarSkulls also made the jump and if I'm not mistaken MKSixer currently owns both so perhaps they can also chime in.

I just transferred my M5 lease on Friday and leased an I8. It is an incredible car. The lines on the car are amazing. The inside of the car is awesome too. I would never go back.

I absolutely second what Twitch Massacre said. I was afraid and reached out to him when deciding between the two, because I thought "shit am I going to miss the power? Or it's subtle yet demanding presence?"

I don't miss it. Up until about 80/90 (in sport) mph it actually feels much quicker than the m6 (size weight difference obviously) and it handles superbly. As mentioned, my biggest tick is its blind spots because of the rear pillars being awkwardly positioned (to me).

Attention is insane. Not one day goes by where you don't catch people taking pictures, staring, on certain days people surrounding the car/make conversation at the gas station etc. most random moment I had was the first day I had mine, a guy around my age and his gf pull up to me at a stop light and he yells "DUDE OPEN THE DOORS! SHE DOESNT ME BELIEVE THEY GO UP!" (Thankfully was saved by the green light and just said "next time!" So it's very overwhelming.

Nothing looks like it out there. Very few exotics garnish more attention. So it's both a pro/con in the same.

And yes, you can have an amazing deal right now. I did a single pay 2 year lease and paid 38K (12k miles) had I done a traditional lease, it would have been 1179+tax with 3999 down.

Unless you plan to track the car- I say jump in with both feet. Take advantage now cause they are moving quick.

I second what Mr.sugarskulls said. If you want one the time to move is now to take advantage of the cap cost reductions and lease specials being offered, specially on MY2015s since they were overstocked after they doubled production to eliminate the pesky waiting list and compensate for the lackluster sales of the i3 but BMW is cutting back production on the i brand as a whole as they focus on developing the i8 Spyder which we should be seeing soon and the next full EV for the BMW i brand which should arrive by 2020.

You can have the best of both worlds...I saw a company, in Germany I think, that takes i8's and drops an M6 motor in it for some ridiculous amount of $$$ (I think north of $500k).

That's a hefty price tag. Although I think that wouldn't be the best of both worlds as the drivetrain is part of what makes the i8 so interesting. At that point you lose the hybrid technology, and completely throw the balance of the car off since that company is dropping that engine in the front bay where the electric motor would otherwise be and stripping the middle engine bay out, killing that near perfect weight distribution.

My original post was mostly tongue in cheek but for those actually interested, the company's called Gabura Racing Technology and they plan beef up the motor to around 800 hp.

Trust me you would hate the i8. Small as hell and getting in and out of the car is a headache even if youre a smaller person. Im 5'11 220 and i wear a suit everyday to work so it definitely doesnt work for me. Also it sounds like shit when the 3 cyl motor is actually on and its very slo compared to what youre coming from. The only pluses are the great range, styling and the curb appeal. Ill take an M5 or M6 any day of the week. If u want to drive one text me and ill organize it for you.

i8 is a concept car that went into production. Lots of stuff missing and from what I hear they have no plans on adding that stuff back. BMW hit a home run on the exterior, but not enough to get beyond what's missing. If you like it as is - go for it... I was close to buying one vs my 16 F12 - could have saved a few $. If the vert was out at the time it may have been a closer decision. I assumed they would take the concept a bit further and round out the car in 17/18. While shopping for a G11 I noticed that where there used to be one in every showroom now there are several, (8 at one dealership) parked out in the lot, rain and all....

I'm about your size, maybe an inch taller, have no issue getting in and out of mine, and also happen to think the 3 cylinder sounds amazing (specially for its small size and being turbocharged). In fact, I've gotten compliments from Porsche guys since everyone seems to be in agreement that the tone is very similar to that of a Carrera S, only a little quieter. With the M6 on the other hand I had to spend a small fortune on an M Performance exhaust to get it to sound half decent, but then again at the time I was coming off the V10 that sounded beautiful even stock. As far as the speed, might be just me but let's just say I don't miss the M6.

Thousands of cars were redirected to the US and other markets from China for reasons I still don't understand as I don't keep up with the Chinese governments shenanigans, but that plus the sudden increase in production BMW put in place to get rid of the waiting list which was preventing the cars from hitting the road and meeting its goal (creating exposure for the i brand) can be attributed to those cars being on the lots. Half of those cars were meant to be on the other side of the world.

Last saturday I had a quick ride in i8. Drove around 50km in total.

Im 187cm tall so at first getting out was not easy. But I think I could improve and get used to it. Other than that no issues at all.

This car is something special for sure. E-mode is amazing for driving around town and overall performance is good enough.

My M6 GC has only 16K km after 2 years and I start to think that i8 could suit my needs nicely. In the end I am not using the back seats as often as I tought I would.

If I get a good offer for a trade-in I will definitely consider it.

My local dealer has 4 i8s in stock and a thought crossed my mind to trade my M6 in. My wife has an i3 and we've had a good experience in general with the i3, and once her lease is up next August, she may get something bigger for the family and I might consider the i8.

I certainly wouldn't want to miss the power, brakes and last but not least Bang&Olufsen.

I do not track my car and I drive 90% of time around town. On top of that speeding tickets in Switzerland are quite expensive. For this very reason I do not get that many opportunities to push my car and enjoy its performance.

When driving i8 I have realized that it has more than enough power for daily use. Up to 120/kmh it goes almost like the M6. Obviously it is not an Autobahn rocket and the breaks are not as sharp as my CCB's. But as an overall package it has a lot of appeal.

Power and brakes, maybe, although in my case I didn't miss them. B&O, however, is a gimmick in our cars. The only thing about the sounds system in the i8 that I didn't like is the lack of a proper EQ, but at least it sounds adequate without being an optional, paid-for placebo.

I'm so glad I didn't take twitchmassacre's and Mr. Sugarskulls advice, I would of hated myself. It's a cool looking car but that's about it, you can not compare to M6, anyway I went with the GTS AMG
