My boy has a 2013 650i x drive n63 (non tu). Recently had no start no crank conditions. He replaced the starter and replaced the battery at the same time. Now when he goes to start the car it makes a split second grind noise and then stops. I told him it believe it is a faulty starter, or the starter was installed incorrectly, but I'm not 100% sure. I can't describe the sound other then a metal on metal grind noise for just a split second. I can post a video after work today to help the diagnosis

EDIT: apparently it made the same exact noise prior to replacing the starter

It's an automatic so it doesn't have a flywheel: not sure on the flex plate though

Also can't figure out how to load a video

Try to manually turn the engine by the crank pulley first to make sure it’s not seize up.

Yeah I was doing some reading/watching earlier today and found a video of a seized engine that sounds almost identical. So I told him to check that, and possibly pull his oil drain plug, to see if he has any oil or how much oil he has (since the car won't run to check on I drive)

There may be some important information left out. How did this car run right before this condition arose? Did he park a perfectly running car in his garage one night and the next day it did this? Perfectly running engines don't typically seize while sitting over night.

I asked him the same thing he said it was being driven normal and didn't have an oil light symbol and just shut off while driving. He didn't say if it jerked when it shut off or any other real details. He ended up taking it to the dealership instead of trying himself. They told him his engine was seized and they want 18k for a new one 😖
