Best Oil for M6
I am sure there are posts on here but I couldn't find anything answering what the best is.
I just purchased a 2014 M6 GC Competition Package and I want to purchase a couple quarts of oil to keep in the trunk as I did with my M3. I am seeing 4 different options. The 0w30, 0w40, 5w30 and 5w40. Now which is the best to go with and brand? I live in warm Miami so don't need anything specific for cold weather. thank you. |

I use 5w30 and a well known make (varies depending on what specials are running). I do however change it every 3-4K miles and not the pathetic long intervals BMW suggest!!

That's calling the kettle black, BMW engineers are crap but you buy specials and change every 3-4K .Why would you want to change your oil at that small mileage .

I am using two oils at my BMWs. At F13 M6 i am using Motul 300W 5W40 with maximum 8k km change intervall (no track drive). On my wife m235i i use Shell Helix Ultra 5W40 with maximum 10k km change. On my M2 at the first oil change we have put BMW M Performance 0V40 oil (aka Shell Helix), but the next oil change, i will change it to Shell 5W40 or Motul 300W 5W40 with 8K km intervall.

I change my oil every 3-4K miles as well, I drive my M6 hard every now and then and by 3k miles the oil is black. I just recently switched over from the original twin turbo BMW oil to 5w-40 Liquid Molly. So far I like how it doesn't burn as fast as the BMW Oil. I would always have to add a qt when I would get close to 3k. I was told this is normal, I have yet had this issue while running liquid Molly.

I am burning a quart every 700 miles on BMW Twin Turbo Oil. I see some of you state that the Liquid Moly does not burn. What was your oil burning consumption before?

I would get the add a qt after 2500-3k miles when using the original. Now with the Liquid Molly 5w-40 I have yet to receive that message and I've been using it for over 7months now.

I think 5w-40 is too thick. Could damage engine

In the UK, BMW recommend 0W-30 for the M6. I'm changing oil at about 8 to 9000 mile intervals, and so far have never needed to top it up at all. The electronic oil gauge indicated still at maximum just prior to the last oil change. That's if the gauge is to be believed! I've a BMW Service Pack on the car, but the last £00 invoice doesn't state what make of oil my BMW garage put in...

I change my oil once/year whether it needs it or not.
Cheapest thing you can do for your car. Coming from the Motorcycle World, you will find that this is the single most discussed, and disagreed upon topic. I also believe that if you rarely if ever encounter temps at or below freezing, 0w is not necessary, and 5w is fine. And on the top end, if you don't see 100 deg F often or at all, 30w works. Everything else is personal preference. |
