My 640d problems and the future

So after having no aircon for almost the whole of the summer which has been pretty unbearable, I have finally managed to get it in to BMW to get it looked at. I had already had a free regas elsewhere which didn't work, didn't do anything.

2 days later get the car back with nearly £3000 of work having been done to it! Condenser was broken (replaced with a quality enhancement unit), compressor was also broken and leaking slowly and that was replaced. Also while at it they found a leaky EGR valve and low battery charge, both accountable for the unpredictable start stop I've been experiencing. My car is currently still under AUC warranty and I was pleasantly surprised that they just fixed it, no quibbles. I know that this is not something that should be payable by me but the service in just getting on and doing it was great.

Now however, I'm deciding what to do for the future - I fancy a change possibly, as I get bored quickly, I wouldn't get another 6 again unless it was an M6 GC but I don't have the budget for that.

Anyone got any suggestions either in BMW or not? Can be anything as long as it has 4 doors/space for car seat and a big enough boot. Been considering going for an X but not sure. Oh and needs to be fairly fast/fun to drive but I know I can't get everything I want

Any thoughts?

Hmm it depends what you are after...

Want a better interior then maybe look at the new 5 or 7 G series cars. Brutally, for me I did notice a definite difference in the 5 to the 7. But I do not like the huge oversized kidney grills on the 7, they look silly.

If you can take the slightly less interiors if not spending larger sums on options then maybe an M3/340i/4GC?

I suppose you could always look at the new 6GT as technically speaking that would be the "obvious" replacement...

do you know what, the 7 might not be a bad shout. I need to go and see just how big they are for daily driving, what do you think?

I had a 740LD from BMW GB whilst my issues were being sorted over summer, i can tell you its a fantastic motor in every respect, i actually quite miss it, the 6 felt very dated when i picked it up last week compared to the 7. You must spec all available toys of course, heres a few snaps

need to see what the used values are like for a late 2015/early 2016 model. Might be doable but like you said, I'd want the toys!

I wasn't going to do finance, I'm not ruling it out if the deal is right but would rather buy cash now or wait for a little while to see if they come down a little more.

++ a hefty discount & contribution, if i were 50 id have one

By the way my 640d a 2013 model also had that condenser issue and was fixed whilst in for a service, i think there is a bullet in advising of a change, but its not a recall.

I have been searching (more like lurking on this board) for what was my next car. I have a Tesla currently, it is a great car, it is real hard for me to get use to not tuning and no exhaust noise. But it does have instant power, pretty roomy interior and two trunks. Im looking into replacing it with a 650 Gran Coupe because I like the power the BMW has, the looks and a descent amount of tech goodies. Just something to consider.

It appears that less than 15 650is have been registered in the U.K which is a shame

pretty sure chiefholley is not in the UK.

And an M3 is fast yes, but I don't want to take the drop in internal quality!

You would have to go for the full leather option, the other let down is that archaic looking hand brake lever

Does a leaky EGR result in loss of coolant?

I noticed my coolant level was a little low before my trip to France a few weeks ago. The dealer did a pressure test of the cooling system and said no fault found but i'm not so sure. Never had a car losing coolant even if it was literallyabout 50-100ml below the max.

Replacing the 640d will be hard, good luck

I should clarify. I had a sticky egr valve which doesn’t cause loss of coolant but I also had a leaky egr cooler, which does cause loss of coolant
