Question HUD dim at night

On my 640i GC, head up display is perfectly visible during the day (intensity set on midpoint) but extremely dim at night (even with intensity fully turned up). Once the numbers change colour for night mode, the orange and white parts are practically invisible against a grey road surface. (No such issue in my 535i which also has HUD.)

Anyone else experienced this?

Any cure?

Have you got the internal cabin lights turned right down? I'm sure the HUD trains to the brightness of the internal lights. Try the little dial next to your head light switch.

As mentioned, the HUD brightness is controlled via iDrive. I find it best to have it just bright enough not to see the 'box' around it, so just the numbers are clear in the dark. You'll notice the HUD will brighten automatically in strong sunlight too.

its should also dim and brighten dependant on what is on front.

when sat in traffic with break llights on in front then the HUD brightens up when on the open road it dims but it still visable.

I wonder if it has dimmed to much and no longer responding to whats in front.

I was wondering if the light sensor was covered by something. But I am not even sure where the sensor is. Such an odd problem to have makes me curious what's going on.

In pre-connected drive vehicles, it was on the back of the rear view mirror. It may be part of the connected drive contraption at the center/top of the windshield now.

I think the original issue was frost-whitened road surfaces at night, which can be highly reflective of the headlights and were drowning out the HUD. Now that roads are darker, the contrast level is OK.
