Tire size question

So I need some input on tires. Ive always driven trucks and this is my first car. BMW 650i. I have these wheels currently: http://www.shopbmwusa.com/PRODUCT/35...L-AND-TIRE-SET
They have terrible tires on them Dunlop run flats. Ive looked at 2 different tires - Pilot super sports and continental extremecontact DWS 06.

Currently on the front I have 245/35R/20 and 275/30R/20. Why are they 35s on the front and 30s on the rear?

The PSS I can put 245/35ZR/20 on the front and either 285/30ZR/20 or 285/35ZR/20 on the rear. (They dont have a 275) Will the 285s fit?

The other CONTINENTAL EXTREMECONTACT DWS 06 is rated very high by everyone and comes in the same sizes I have now.

What would you do?

Your front rims are 8.5" wide and the rear ones are 9" wide so basically your rear tires must be wider than the front ones. On the other hand the total height of your wheels (for 650i) must be almost the same and that's why your front tires have larger aspect ratio compare to rear ones (35% vs 30%).

The widest tire recommended for 9" rims is 275 mm.

I don't recommend CONTINENTAL EXTREMECONTACT DWS 06 since it's very hard compound tire (UTQG 540)... you better chose a softer compound like MPSS or BRIDGESTON (non RFT)

The continentals can't be any worse than the dunlops I have now....they seem to last a good bit longer as well ... perhaps thats due to the slightly harder compound?

You're looking at this from the wrong perspective. The RFT's feel stiff because of the metal internals and reinforced sidewall. The tread itself is usually a soft and lower number like 220-240 so you will get traction out of them. Going to a 540 treadwear tire you're going to have traction issues as the 650 puts down a lot of torque, and that can be somewhat unsafe depending on how you drive. I would stick to a treadwear that is closer to the stock figures and just get non-rft's and you'll have a great ride.
