Coding the parking brake to engage automatically after engine shut down?
Hi,
I've walked away from my M6 a few times without engaging the parking brake after shutting down the engine. I'm used to it engaging automatically because I've been driving my partner's Nissan Qashqai and only owned the M6 for about two weeks. Now I'm extra conscious about engaging the parking brake before I walk away. Is there anyway it be could be coded to engage automatically after engine shut down? Thanks! |

As long as the car is in gear and not neutral it will engage automatically when you shut the car off. Last edited by danielgmanm6; 04-29-2023 at 07:46 PM.. Reason: Misspelling |

Echoing the above statement. As far as I know, any DCT BMW will engage it automatically when sitting off the engine if it’s in gear as far as I know.

When it is turned off and goes into Park, the transmission "locks" the driveshaft. (turning off engine while foot on the brake peddal) As far as I know, the parking brake is not automatically engaged (on the M6 anyway).

I think you guys misunderstood. I wasn't referring to park mode which is what happens when you shut it down in gear.
I'm talking the hand brake/parking brake latch that we pull up and down just under the shifter. Park mode will hold the car but will put pressure on the transmission. So is there something we can code for that to engage after engine shut down? |

Having said that, M6 DCT (F-series crs) is not really an automatic, but an automated manual. Unless you park in rather steep incline, the pressure on transmission is insignificant, wouldn’t worry about it. I’ve driven manuals (and automated manuals) for 39 years (next week) and never had any issues when applying common sense… Tbh, I don’t quite understand the need to engage parking/hand brake when parking on reasonably level ground. Naturally, what I have written above does not apply when parking on incline/decline - common sense… |

The drive outside my house has a slight incline which is why the parking brake/e brake/hand brake is something I'd like to engage automatically like my partner's Qashqai. As I mentioned it's just something I've become used to.
But If it can't be done I'll just need to be aware of it with a little bit of common sense. Just need to break the habit. |

Unless your drive shaft or your differential are busted, the car CAN NOT roll if the transmission is in PARK. Park locks the transmission. The hand brake uses electric motors on each rear wheel to clamp the rear brake pads to the brake rotors.

I believe OP understands that when the transmission is in P the car will not roll, but since they live on an incline they would prefer to have the brake hold the car and take any stress rather than the locked transmission.
Alas, I have no solution to the problem. I've just gotten in the habit of manually engaging the parking brake every time I park the car. |
