I did the update on the iDrive on my 2013 GC. Not sure what it did but it was as simple as you described. I love your blog. Thanks for taking the time to share your experiences with us less inclined to understand everything BMW 6 series. Your videos are awesome.

I haven't noticed any changes to iDrive either. I got the impression from the PDF describing the update that most of the changes were beneficial to phones other than the iPhone. I mainly did it do I'd know how to do it in the future if they give us some new features. I'm hoping there will be one shortly after the iPhone 5 comes out with the new software that should allow for texts/email. Start to finish, I think I could download and install it in less than 5 minutes.

I'm really not a fan of the hard drive as I find it more of a pain to navigate, and importing large quantities of music often takes longer than most of my daily trips (this is annoying because the car has to be on to import music, and I don't have a garage to lock it up while I've got the car running). I put music on there becaus I just wanted to see how it worked, and it also gives me a backup source when my old iPhone that stays in the car overheats and leaves me without an audio source - aside from AM/FM/Satellite. If they could redesign the software to the point that it navigates like the iPod and you get cover art, then I'd be all over it as it would get around my overheating issue. I feel like the hard drive is a lot like putting an Otterbox on an iPhone. Daily use is cumbersome and annoying, and I really don't want to mess with something so aggravating on a regular basis. I'd rather pay to replace my iPhone if I drop it than spend every day being inconvenienced. I guess what I'm saying in my crappy metaphor lol is the hard drive is good in theory but its execution leaves something to be desired...

I have an idea to solve this iTunes music sync problem that have yet to be tested out since my F13 has not arrived yet (and my E92 is too old to support it). If you could somehow get an Airport Extreme or Express within the range of the car, technically you can remotely sync the iPhone in your car without ever removing it. New music and playlists on your iMac can wirelessly sync to your iPhone. Effortless new music selections as soon as they are purchased. Will it work or am I dreaming?
Still would not solve the overheating problem. Perhaps an iPod Touch may do the trick. Not sure. |

I just uploaded a video with the door lighting you asked for. I'm writing this on my phone and can't properly post it, but it's the newest video on my YouTube Channel if you want to check it out. I'll post it in a few hours when I get back to my MacBook.

Thanks. Video's great. Exactly what I asked for and more. Question: do the door handle lights illuminate the ground or other lights under the door take care of that?

There are lights on the underside of the doors. The handles have lights hidden on the inside.

You're are legend! I thought I was passionate about cars and the BMW brand but you take it to a different level. I have mentioned this before, but your blog is fantastic. My views maybe a little bias but the 6er is in a class of its own. Your latest post highlight how amazing the front LED lights are, I recently viewed a X6 with Front LED's which were not a patch on the 6er!

That's the great thing about these forums - people who get our love of these cars. Where most people might think "obsessive kid with too much time on his hands," you see passion. Nevertheless, thank you The LEDs are one of the best new styling details on BMWs, and the 6er wears them very, very well. As much as I adore my beloved M-tuned exhaust, M steering wheel, Nappa dash, ARS, and xDrive, I think the LEDs are the option I wouldn't give up for anything else.

Here are a few more pics to make up for what I left out of the video. Consider them my apology

Awesome. I am sure they look even more stunning in real life. It is very challenging to take photos of lighting effects. Thanks for putting in the extra effort.
One more thing. Does that mean the ground will not be illuminated when the door is shut? Sounds trivial but important to me where I live. There are puddles everywhere. |

No ground illumination
The lights are on the inside area of the handle and glow inward, not downward. They serve very little practical purpose, but they look pretty cool. I don't have a good close-up shot of the lights on the handle pulls themselves, but you can kind of see them on the pics below.

The door handles are clearly visible but it is difficult to tell what effect the light has on the surrounding area under daylight. Nighttime shots may show the effect better if you have any. Tks.

Thanks again Southern. The nighttime effects are more apparent in this latest video. Looks like the darker exterior reflect much less light compared to the white exterior. Nevertheless, the outcome is still noticeable. I just need to watch out for the puddles when approaching the vehicle.

I agree that the white pic you posted looks better with the illumination.
Taking this video tonight and focusing so closely on the light did show me that the ground is illuminated by the handle when the doors are closed - I never noticed this before in the seven months I've had my car. It is more apparent in reality than the pictures indicate. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. The light is subtle, but I think it is sufficient to keep your feet clean and dry.

Thanks again. Pleased to learn that the inward facing illumination actually reaches all the way to the ground. Once again, I suppose I shouldn't have doubted the designers until I saw the real thing. Still learning everyday.

Not sure whether this has been previously discussed. Perhaps someone can advise. Does the F13 or F12 650i have the Driving Experience sound module that emulates engine sounds through the speakers like in the F10? If yes, does it adversely affect the audio when music is playing through the speakers? What is the experience like?

I went to Houston this weekend, so I had a lot of time sitting around in the car with a somewhat new iPhone and the world's largest F13 media gallery. What to do? Well, what do you expect me to do in such a situation? Of course I had to make a slightly (or completely) obnoxious video on iMovie combining a bunch of pics from my phone into 1:05 of shameless 6er sexxiness.
