Yeah there is no break in service, but should I still keep it calm for 1200 miles?

I believe for any new engine you have to keep it calm for the first 500-1000 miles to be properly broken-in but again many people believe they have to drive their car hard from the first day.

I DID HAVE a 2011 S63 AMG I did not keep calm from 18 km on the odometer .. they said I have to have a test drive at Deliver ... well we opened it up, 110km in first gear on AMG Sport+ ... 3 years of spark plug cylinder 8 cracked under heavy loads and miss-firing cylinder 8 and burning oil like no-ones business ... 2015 S63 AMG followed rules and NO ISSUES ... follow recommendations if you intend to KEEP THE CAR!

no issues on my 2016 M6 Cab or 2007 M6 Cab following recommended break in

Finally we agreed at some points lol
But seriously 110km/h in first gear? it should be very long gear ratio... almost the same gear ratio of second gear of M5/M6 MDCT

LOL ... it was a Mandatory Test drive ... it was fun, and it did MOVE!!!

I recall asking my sales agent "this is my car right ... so I can do what I want on test drive?" He said absolutely!

My Sales Agent was Red in the face and said he has never felt or seen a test drive like that ... needless to say he is still my sales guy, but never asked me for another mandatory test drive at Deliver and we have now done 4 Three Pointed deliveries from him vs the 3 BMW deliveries ...

Chalk it up to an experience ... had to get rid of the 2011 S63 ASAP

They did warranty the spark plugs and re-tune 6 times in 3 years ... got rid of it before warranty was up

BUT WHAT AN EXPERIENCE!!! all at the same time

I still see the 2011 S63 from time to time around town ... biting my lip

You might just have gotten a bad engine on the Benz.

I broke all rules for all of my cars and never have have any engine trouble or consumes oil.

If a engine is going to be bad, it will probably be bad no matter how you break it in.

There are people here who follow the rules, never have problems, but many still consumes oil. And there are people here who break it in hard, no problems, but some consumes oil too.

All this just means, doesn't really matter what you do.

Personally I do WOT when I get the new car a few times to seat the rings, change oil, and then I follow the rules for the rest of 1200 miles to break in other parts of the car like the gearbox.

I was driving as the break in procedure suggests not more than 5000 rpm. First 100km engine braking and never full throttle but even with half throttle I got to 6000 rpm couple of times unfortunately. So at 1.800km car is asking for 1 liter of oil. So I didn't add one liter and instead completed break in procedure. Engine oil and differential oil is changed.
Why was it asking for oil??? And is it ok to complete break in procedure at 1.800km??

Those S63s just likes oil. Like I said before, based on this forum and others, doesn't matter how you break it in. There are people who baby it according to the manual, but still consumes oil, and there are people who drive it like they stole it, also consumes oil.

I did WOT break in on my X5M and it doesn't consume oil. I will do the same for my new M6 and see what happens, maybe I just got lucky the first time.

I followed manual for all three recent cars (2 650i with N63 and N63tu engine and current M6 with S63tu engine) and always added 1 quarter every 1000-1500 mile; however after 10k miles it reduced to 1 quarter every 2-3 k mile... TBH with you I have no issue with this Oil consumption especially for M6...I mean I do expect a monster with this much power and torque needs oil when I have 11-13 average mpg LOL

Update on my break-in or lack of break-in in this case. Got my PPF installed last week and now just shy of 200 miles... at this rate who knows when/if 1200 miles will come. SA told me that the 1200 mile check is 1200 miles or 3 months so I expect I'll be taking it in for break-in service in the new year.
