so many ignorant posters. what a shame.

It's the year of the "horse" and they are dedicating a car to it.

It's a "Special Edition" for a market that cares about that.

Tacky is tacky, no matter what the culture. This is a load of horseshit to the finest degree.

To put this in context, I'd imagine a similarly negative reaction if BMW were to do an M6 "Santa Claus Edition" for Christmas.

Many of us have an affinity for BMWs because of the Germanic and European nature of the product. There has long been a tradition of modding the U.S. versions with Euro parts, removing DOT sidemarkers etc. to make them even more like the original German versions. In this case it seems incongruous to slap on characters from another culture that don't seem genuine or related to the original product design. It does not feel authentic to a global audience that is watching the company pander to a market.

I agree that it would be just as tacky and brand diluting to have a special edition for a western holiday or celebration. Would I have wanted a bicentennial "Spirt of '76" 3.0CS in 1976 in the U.S.? No, that would have been tacky and made me question the authenticity BMW in the market.

Not a repost but can we...

So many fanboys on here wishing their beloved brand was more than a business....get over it! BMW will make their money and their non enthusiast customers(the ones w/money) happy.

Agreed.

Ma means a horse, therefore it is a good marketing term for Chinese market as 2014 is " horse year"

thanks for the info. I expect it to fall on many deaf ears. ... you might as well have been talking quantum physics.. " Joe Forum Guy " isnt cultured.... he just wants to talk about how he thinks BMW isn't what it used to be ....

Agreed. All these useless comments from people who simply can hit the delete key or just " not buy one".... but instead they just * have* to show their ignorance..

Chinese culture in general upholds things & ideas that reference fortune and allude to cultural ideas. Even little things like phone numbers or custom license plates become a big deal (desire for the number 8) and people pay huge sums for these things. It is important to understand what the culture desires and understand symbolism and allusions to successfully market a product in a different market. It seems BMW understands the China market quite well.

BMW's Chinese name, Bao Ma/寶馬, "precious horse", doesn't sound like much when translated into English but the name alone carries much positive cultural connotation.

Before the days of automobiles, the horse was the primary form of transport so alluding a BMW to a horse gives it a special meaning; the relationship between the horse and rider was important in those times and now BMW marketing implies a similar relationship between the "precious horse" and the driver...clever if you ask me. The horse has been historically and culturally a favorite animal for Chinese. There's a year named after it every 12 years, much of the Chinese lexicon contains idioms referencing horses' agility & energy, and traditionally, was a symbol of the noble classes as only the rich & royal had horses for transportation, etc. Even in daily vocabulary, words often reference the horse (i.e., Roadway = Horse Road, Immediately = "on a horse"). Now in the year of the horse, this special edition not only combines the significance of the new year, but also to its own name as a "precious horse". Good move.

Sorry for the long post, but understanding different cultures helps to understand different marketing strategies. Yes, Americans wouldn't give two F's about these editions and yes, it is quite superficial and unnecessary to have these special editions, but given the cultural factors and current economic environment in China, this is a smart move on BMW's part.
nice to see that there ARE a few intelligent life forms here.....

The quickest lap at SIC last year was 1:34.484, and it was set by a Mercedes. Looks like BMW still has a lot of work to do...

“Horse Edition” just doesn't sound right. It would be a lot better if they simply call it the “Stud Edition”…

Btw, the character embossed in the headrest is written in Chinese calligraphy, so I don’t think it was really a matter of choosing traditional character over simplified character. I personally prefer traditional characters anyway as simplified characters look too much like Japanese…

Those will all sell very well, and I can imagine someone collecting all 12. That will be very special indeed.

I'm seeing a lot of ignorant responses from westerners who don't get the Chinese market.

These will definitely sell and are a pretty good idea IMO.

Bcoz traditional Chinese character for "horse" much elegant and formal than simply one.
