1. Check your build sheet; or
2. Check your exhaust tips. Msport exhaust has a valve on one of (I believe the inner) outlet from the muffler. Msport exhaust should also have a single black trapezoidal tip |

Can I be more specific? Not really. Post a picture and we can tell you.

Non-Msport also has a valve. You are right about the black tip though; the non-Msport is chrome.

I'm only asking because I'm coming from a 2016 535 and my 640 exhaust sounds so much more aggressive |

To add the the minutae, your asking about the M-Sport exhaust. The M performance exhaust is an upgrade available to the actual M cars
If you have the msport, each black trapezoid has two round exhaust openings when you get down and look straight in. One hole is open always while the other has a flap, which is opened automatically with a vacuum line |

I have a 2013 535 and a 2017 640i GC. Both are M-Sport and both just have the standard exhaust. The 640i is noticeably louder and it is not the sport exhaust. Even without the Sport exhaust, I think you have the valve as mentioned in previous quotes. Look under your car, on one muffler, you will see the valve (actually the flap) if looking into the exhaust and you'll also see the valve itself from underneath.
I know the '17 GC is an LCI model and there are changes there but I think your 640 has the standard exhaust unless something was done aftermarket. Related, i have round tips in black chrome as standard. BTW - I ordered the "BMW Performance Exhaust System" from my local BMW dealer. It shows as fitting when you do ShopBWMusa.com for my model. It doesn't and have since confirmed. It is made for the true coupe (read: 2 door) and doesn't match up without modifications. (which i didn't want to do). I still want to look at aftermarket exhaust but really liked the option of M Performance Exhaust as it was "easy" and still BMW. I don't want to change body panels (diffuser, etc). I know there are many topics on aftermarket exhaust, tying flap open, etc. Not trying to hijack this thread for that extended discussion. |

M Performance Exhaust is a dealer/portside add-on. Most BMWs can't even be ordered or built with it installed. So I'm saying, randomly picking any car, you likely won't have a MPE installed. It's a $4000 after delivery or portside installed add-on.
So for most BMWs, when you custom order a car, dealers give you another sheet of accessories that you can select. These include MPE, black grills, decals, steering wheels etc. These items are then either installed at the prep center when the car arrives at port or installed when it arrives at the dealer before you pick it up. There are very few exceptions where MPE and other accessories are factory installed. You can build a M4/3 right now and have gloss black kidneys factory installed for example. And IIRC, the late build E9X M3s were able to get MPEs factory installed. As others have said, the surest way is to stick your head under it and look for the part number or the key characteristics of the unit.

On my M6, it was dealer installed. And on the M6, it is not a selectable option when you build it, so it doesn't show up on the build sheet. I'm sure dealers have an "addendum" sheet for all the dealer/port installed items (cosmetic, MPE, etc), that you can further select when you build the car in person.

The OP is using the wrong terms - he has to be referring to the m-sport exhaust, which was a factory included option depending on your package. It should show up in a vin decoder. I don't believe there is an M performance exhaust option for a 640, which is what the OP has.

M Sport Exhaust...I don't know...I've never bought a M Sport car before...Only M cars here in my household! (My X5d could not be optioned with M Sport here in the US). But you're right, IIRC, for pretty much every M Sport model, the M Sport Exhaust is part of the package.

Would you guys say it was worth it to get ExhaustMeister for a non M sport car? I want a better soundwithout dropping $$$ for a whole new system. I have a 650 but figured it applied to 640 to an extent as well.
